Former Gov. Al Quie, IR, remembered when he took office in 1978 he was interested in achieving income tax reform and reducing class sizes.
Quie said politicians are often faulted for changing their minds, but “I think a governor that has such an enormous amount of pride that he won’t change his mind if he’s wrong, you don’t want him,” he said.
Quie said he thinks the opinions of governors after they take office are sounder than their opinions voiced on the campaign stump.

Quie mentioned before the ceremony that he considers his biggest triumph a journey he made over nine summers, riding horseback along the Continental Divide.

The papers of Albert Harold Quie include congressional office, legislative, and subject files, as well as campaign and political materials, personal and family correspondence and miscellany, and audio-visual materials.
These files were kept by Herb Johnson, aide to Governor Quie, and concern proposed legislation to establish a Minnesota Center for the Older Adult Learner (1978-1979), the MinnesotaBoard on Aging (1979-1982), and the Minnesota Green Thumb program (1981-1982).
The personal files contain materials (primarily correspondence) relating to persons and organizations with which Albert Quie maintained personal contact, activities in which he was personally involved, or issues in which he was personally interested.

Al Quie, the third child of Nettie and Albert Knute Quie, was born September 18, 1923, at Longfurrow Farm near Dennison and Nerstrand, Minn. Like most farm children, Al learned to do chores at a young age.
Al was successful in his bid for governor of Minnesota in 1978.
Al is a member of Minnetonka Lutheran Church and is a voting member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America Church-Wide Assemblies.

 GRETCHEN QUIE: An Inventory of Her Papers at the Minnesota Historical Society
Gretchen Quie, Minnesota's First Lady from 1979 through 1982, was born in Waverly, Iowa, on August 4, 1927, the daughter of Ella and Sam Hansen.
In February 1958, Al Quie was elected Minnesota's First District congressman in a special election to fill the term of August Andresen, who had died the previous month.
After Al Quie was re-elected to his own term in November 1958, The Quies moved to Washington, D.C. While being a congressman's wife was a very different experience, some things did not change.

Al Grender sends some interesting news: "As part of our 50th wedding anniversary celebration this past summer, Carol (class of '53) and I were presented a plaque notifying us that Minor Planet 10974 has been named, "Carolalbert" in our honor.
Part of the news is that Al will have his 80th birthday in September, and to honor that a series of three luncheons, with speakers, are being held.
Al's son, Joel, (St. Olaf, 1978) is pastor of Prairie Lutheran Church in Eden Prairie, MN.
