Gallagher and Shean - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gallagher and Shean was a highly successful double-act on Vaudeville and Broadway in the 1910s and 1920s, consisting of Edward Gallagher (1873 - March 28, 1929) and Al Shean (real name Albert Schoenberg) (May 12, 1868 - August 12, 1949).
The case claimed that Gallagher and Shean's act was "unique and irreplaceable." The comedians' defense was that their act was a mediocrity and the judge initially found in their favor, although the decision was later reversed.
Shean was also uncle to the Marx Brothers.

Shean." Of more significance to the film world, Shean was the younger brother of Minnie Marx, who in turn was the mother of the Marx Brothers.
When the merry Marxes were struggling in vaudeville in the World War I years, it was Uncle Al Shean who wrote several of the team's best and most popular sketches; he also decided that Harpo Marx would be a more effective comedian if he didn't try to speak on stage.
The Marx Brothers returned the favor by seeing to it that the aging, impecunious Al Shean was cast in substantial character roles in such MGM films as San Francisco (1936), The Great Waltz (1938), and Ziegfeld Girl (1941).

MARXOLOGY - Mr Gallagher and Mr Shean
As cousins of Al Shean, the young Hamburg sisters of The New York Wonder Kiddies reportedly had the only rights to sing the original verses of Mr Gallagher and Mr Shean as they were used in the Follies.
Al Shean, born Adolph Schönberg and younger brother of the Marx Brothers' mother Minnie, was together with Edward Gallagher one of most famous male teams in Vaudeville.
Gallagher and Shean's signature costumes came from the Follies number which was set in Egypt, reflecting the "Egyptian craze" of the early 1920s that was also evident in early I'll Say She Is-numbers like In The Sheik's Tent and The Wonderful Nile.

Their double-sided eponomously-titled hit smash of 1922 was such a phenomenon that it was covered by a wide number of artists, including the future Happiness Boys, Billy Jones and Ernie Hare.
Upon their wild success, the Shuberts sued for breach of contract and left Gallagher and Shean in the peculiar position of having to argue before a court that they were not especially talented and that the Shuberts had not lost anything by not having them on their roster of artists.
The case was decided against Gallagher and Shean, and the Shuberts promptly took the team on the road.

Marx, herself a mimic of no small ability, who asked Al Shean to write a big-time vaudeville act for his nephews.
