Topic: Al Trautwig

Tuesday's mailbag: OLN's on-air talent, doping, Tour history, left field and The Great Gazoo
Yesterday, Al wondered aloud why there weren't more camera shots of Lance, which is comparable to wondering why baseball doesn't show continuous footage of Sammy Sosa in the field waiting for a ball to be hit to him; or sitting on the bench waiting for his turn at bat.
Al, there's a game going on out there, and the cameras are where the action is. Lance is just waiting for his turn at the plate, which will come soon enough.
It seems to me that Al's job is to ask questions that someone who is new to the sport might ask, in order to better educate the American public about the sport of cycling.

 Al Trautwig: An Underrated Treasure
When I first began listening to Trautwig, I was upset by his lack of a deep knowledge of baseball, but as I listened to him over a period of time, I noted how often he would ask fellow Yankees broadcasters Jim Katt and Ken Singleton extremely perceptive questions.
Trautwig acknowledged that there were nuances to the game that Katt or Singleton understood and could explain better than he could.
Trautwig makes no pretense to be a baseball expert, and that is so refreshing.

Unfortunately Al’s inane prattle and annoying voice makes the primetime show nearly unwatchable despite the fact that it is co-hosted with the always entertaining Bob Roll.
OLN apparently brought in Al because he supposedly was going to better appeal to American audiences but I think he looks like a fish, his broadcasting technique stinks like a fish and Kirsten despite her cheerleader-like over-enthusiasm was much better and a heck of a lot easier on the eyes.
Al Trautwig is OLN's concept of "Big Time Television Sports Voice." This is the same problem that whoever was doing it two years ago and Kirsten last year was supposed to solve: we can't leve Bob Roll alone in front of a camera.
