You can get a visa at the Wajajah border crossing which would take you the Sohar - Muscat route.
I don't know about the Al Ain/Buraimi route but my Omani colleagues advise against it owing to the single carriageway and propensity for accidents.
If you are planning the drive down to Salalah, make sure you have a driving companion.
