Paul Gravett: Article - Al Williamson
For this new compilation of comics from 1978 to today Williamson provides a dynamic image of the hero for the front cover, while the endpapers present his stunning Flash Gordon tableau from the 1980 National Cartoonists' Society portfolio.
Williamson was in his element in Jones' homage to EC science fiction.
It would be hard to conceive of a finer showcase for Williamson's mature comics artistry than this labor of love.

Lisa Hinz and Donald Williamson (1987) reflect on the evidence presented in past studies relating bulimia and depression and discriminate between the idea that bulimia is an affective variant of depression or a separate diagnostic entity often associated with depression.
Furthermore, Hinz and Williamson (1987) acknowledge that the Fairburn and Cooper's study, which directly compared the phenomenology of depression and bulimia, "found distinct differences in symptom patterns between the two groups...in particular, this study found that bulimics were less depressed and more obsessive and anxious".
Hinz and Williamson (1987) interpret the findings in these studies to show that "depression is a significant problem that is associated with bulimia but is not the only form of psychopathology observed in eating disorders".

Williamson’s sapsucker populations have declined throughout their range from 1982 to 1991, with particularly strong declines in the Pacific Northwest (Dobbs et al.
In their study, Williamson’s sapsucker chose nest trees that were softer than neighboring or random trees and chose softer trees than the red-naped sapsucker and hairy woodpecker.

As Potter (1984) points out, this method introduces an element of chance since "the change of a single letter in the preceding text could double a word's effective viewing time by causing it to be presented alone instead of with another word." (p.92).
In the Williamson and Muter study, a consistent number of words was maintained within each display for each of the different RSVP conditions.
However, Williamson and Muter (1985) found that even when a source of external pacing was provided in both a page-format and RSVP condition, subjects' comprehension of text presented via an RSVP display was at least equivalent to comprehension of traditionally displayed text.

The Quest for Al Williamson's Flash Gordon #1
Williamson traded it to Gray Morrow for a ray gun Morrow had whittled himself." Now Gray Morrow is another artist whose work I collect, and I just filed that away as something to talk to Gray about if I ever got to meet him.
I had asked Al about those originals a long time ago and he told me that story had never been returned to him and he figured that the art was stolen.
As you reported, Al made some comments about how the pages weren't as good as he remembered, how the drawing was weak, and this figure or that figure was poor; this all to the protests of those looking over his shoulder.

 Secret Agent X-9
Williamson, who has always disliked the superhero genre, male or female, isn't an exception but he is partial to one side of the equation.
In Williamson's later strips he often placed sunglasses on the heroine, to hide her eyes, to make her resemblance to earlier versions less apparent.
Williamson would certainly dispute that everything he had done prior to 1980 was in service to his work on Star Wars.

Williamson's 13 year stint on Secret Agent X-9 (later renamed Secret Agent Corrigan), even though it's his longest sustained work on any title, gets short shrift, as if he was slumming or being punished by working in strips.
Williamson has said in interviews that his first exposure to the work of Raymond came in 1940 when he was 10.
Williamson grew up in Columbia and I wonder if there was a three year lag in publishing the American strip.

One characteristic that posterior neocortical seizures share is the tendency to have multiple spread patterns (Salanova et al 1992; 1993; Williamson et al 1992a; 1992b; 1995; Ho et al 1994; Fogarasi et al 2003).
Paresthesias are usually contralateral to the side of seizure onset (Williamson et al 1987; 1992b; Cascino et al 1993; Ho et al 1994; Salanova et al 1995).

If the Rayner, Slowiaczek, Clifton, and Bertera (1983) finding is correct, that the planning and execution of an eye movement from one location to another takes, on average, 175-200 ms, then elimination of this process in reading using an RSVP display may result in much more time being available for processing of the words themselves.

This is a nice collection of Al's 1980's and 1990's work(I should say pencil work because Al's been inking for Marvel for about 20 years).
In my opinion, this dosen't really compare to "The Art Of Al Williamson" or the recently released "Hidden Lands"(why hasn't that been released in hardcover?),however this is a really good compliment to both.
