  The Auburn High School Band - History
Alabama Polytechnic Institute history professor Dr. Paul Irvine served as Interim Band Director for the remainder of the 1943-44 year, and Betty Benton was appointed as Mr.
Alabama Polytechnic Institute graduate student Bob Lewis took over the band for fall semester of that year, and was succeeded in January 1954 by George Corradino, a Florida State music graduate who had previously been director of the 610th Air Force Band in Panama City, Florida.
In the fall of 1956, a young band director by the name of Tommy Goff came to Auburn High School, and the modern era of the AHS Band was born.

Spurlin was previously a Graduate Teaching Assistant at the University of Alabama where, in 2002-2003, he served in the capacity of Assistant Director for the "Million Dollar Marching Band" and as conductor of the Alabama Symphonic Band.

The Honors Band is known nationwide as a top high school performing ensemble, which can be seen by its many awards and honors.
The Symphonic Band was known as the Concert Band until 1994, and has a record of 88-22-2-0-0 since 1984, thought to be the best record for a "second" band in the state (despite the fact that the Symphonic Band always competes against other school's top bands).
The Symphonic Band generally plays grade V music, and was the first "second" band in the state to receive a superior rating at state competition in 1976.

The goals of the 5th Alabama Infantry Regiment Band are the preservation of the history and principles of the the Old South through the performance of the the music of that era, some of which has not been heard for well over 135 years.
The Band has played for the National Conventions of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, the Sons of Confederate Veterans, and the National Civil War Preservations Trust Society.
The Band was designated by the CSS Hunley Commission as the Official Band for the Internment Ceremonies for the crew of the CSS Hunley in Charleston, SC.

The band went on to win the Academy of Country Music's Artist of the Decade title for the 1980's, sell in excess of 45 million albums, become the first group to ever be named the Country Music Association's Entertainer of the Year and forever change the way bands were accepted in the country format.
In 1982, Alabama had #1 hits with "Mountain Music," "Take Me Down" and "Close Enough To Perfect." Two of their albums went platinum, "Mountain Music" (which won the '82 Grammy) and "My Home's In Alabama," and they took home honors as Entertainer of the Year and Group of the Year.
Another album Grammy was presented to the band in 1983, this one for the platinum-selling "The Closer You Get." The title cut from the album hit #1, as did two more in 1983: "Dixieland Delight" and "Lady Down On Love." Once again, they swept the awards shows in the categories of Entertainer, Group and Album.
