The Alabama Great Southern Railroad Company, Ltd., a British company, was organized in 1877 by railroad investor Emile Erlanger as the successor to the Alabama and Chattanooga Railroad.
In the late nineteenth century, the AGS was one of the five railroads that comprised the Queen and Crescent Route between Cincinnati, the Queen City of the Midwest, and New Orleans, the Crescent City.
In April, 1890 the East Tennesee, Virginia and Georgia Railway and the Richmond and Danville Railroad purchased a controlling interest in the AGS.

In 1879, when the Alabama Great Southern Railroad was built through Attalla, and a hotel was built on the railroad property there to serve as a depot and as an eating place, he went to Attalla and became the first one to operate it.
A Southern Methodist Episcopal church was erected in 1865.
Alabama City was his “child” and he never deviated from his campaign for it to absorb both Attalla and Gadsden.

The Southern Railway Historical Association, Inc. is a non-profit educational organization chartered in North Carolina for the preservation and dissemination of information related to Southern Railway, its predecessors, successors and affiliates.
Southern Railway was created in 1894, largely from the financially-stressed Richmond and Danville system and the East Tennessee, Virginia and Georgia Railroad.
Southern also subsequently controlled the Queen and Crescent Route (Alabama Great Southern; New Orleans and Northeastern; Cincinnati, New Orleans and Texas Pacific; and for a time the Alabama and Vicksburg), and the Georgia Southern and Florida, which were operated separately.

 Alabama Academy of Honor: Frank Park Samford, Jr.
Samford was born January 29, 1921, in Montgomery, Alabama, the son of Hattie Mae Noland and Frank Park Samford, Sr., insurance company executive, grandson of William H. Samford, lawyer, U.S. Congressman, State Senator, and Governor of Alabama.
Samford was a charter member of the Kidney Foundation of Alabama and was currently chairman of the $1.5 million fund-raising campaign for the Alabama Kidney Center at the University of Alabama Medical Center in Birmingham.
In 1970, he was a trustee-at-large of the Independent College Funds of America, and he has served as a trustee on the boards of the University of Montevallo, Auburn University, and Indian Springs School.

 RAILROAD TO PAY $13M TO SETTLE LIABILITY AT SUPERFUND SITE US Department of Justice - Find Articles
Two weeks ago, Judge Mary Ann Vial Lemmon, United States District Court Judge for the Eastern District of Louisiana, found the Alabama Great Southern Railroad Company liable for pollution at the site caused by the Creosote Works, one of the oldest industrial facilities in the area.
It was built by the railroad in 1882 and operated almost continuously until 1972.
The railroad used the Creosote Works to treat piles and timbers used in the construction of the Lake Ponchartrain trestle to complete the rail line from Cincinnati to New Orleans.

 Bessemer Hall of History
The Alabama Great Southern Railroad Company completed construction of the Bessemer passenger terminal in March, 1916.
The structure located at 1905 Alabama Avenue is 170 feet long and 50 feet wide with exterior walls of pressed brown brick.
The combination of hot water and steam offered great economy of operation since the entire building could be heated with only one pound pressure of steam.

The first was from a collector in Arlington, Virginia who had annual reports for the Alabama Great Southern Railroad from 1895-1940 and another set for the Mobile and Ohio from 1901-1931 as well as issues of Ties, the company magazine of the former Southern Railroad, from 1947-82.
We had already acquired some railroad annual reports and some for both of these railroads, but our holdings were skimpy in the case of the Alabama Great Southern and considerably later for the Mobile and Ohio.
I was excited to have acquired some hunks of early primary documents for researchers of Alabama railroad history.

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - A New Orleans jury Monday awarded $2.5 billion in punitive damages against railroad giant CSX Transportation in a class-action suit related to a 1987 fire caused by a chemical leak.
     More than 8,000 people claimed damages after a railroad car carrying butadiene, a flammable gas, leaked, emitting vapors that caused a two-day neighborhood fire, according to Wendell Gaulthier, the class-action lawyer in the suit.
     Railroad companies are required to check cars containing toxic chemicals to ensure they are not leaking.
