 FretlessBass.com - Alain Caron Interview
Alain Caron: When I was 14 years old, playing in a top 40 band, a friend of mine had a LANCER fretless bass that I played for a few weeks, but I went back to my fretted precision bass, the sound was more appropriate for the style of music we were playing.
Alain Caron: It was a closer sound to an upright bass, I was listening to Ray Brown and Scot LaFaro all the time.
Alain Caron: I use the finger style on fretless and upright using three fingers (index, middle and ring) and a slap technique that I develop over the years using my thump up and down and my index and middle finger.

The International Institute Of Bassists | Bass Lessons Online - Ray Riendeau   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
Double slapping is a contemporary slap bass technique often utilized by electric bassists such as Victor Wooten and Alain Caron.
If you were to apply the traditional bouncing thumb slap bass technique to "Ornithology" where your thumb immediately rebounds away from the string after striking it, you would completely eliminate the possibility of double slapping and incorporating an upstroke into your line.
Since your slapping hand is no longer in a position to really mute effectively like it normally would be when using standard fingerstyle bass technique to play grooves, I'd recommend using the inner part of your forearm to mute the E and A strings as much as possible.

Tonebone Bassbone - Development of the Bassbone
We also discovered that the tonal range on many amps is limited and that many bass players want to be able to fine tune their tone to get the most of their systems.
As these are typically not true bypass designs, bass players are forced to compromise by keeping these effects in the signal chain even when not in use.
Bassbone was developed to address the real needs of bass players and to provide them with a tool that is at once flexible and practical, while opening the door to a greater array of sounds and textures.

Caron’s own albums may be as predominantly bass-centric as Miller’s, but unlike Miller he’s not averse to painting more colourful pictures by giving up center stage.
He’s also comfortable with technology, using the Roland V-bass processor to sound like a bass horn alternative to guitarist Pat Metheny’s popular synth tone on the short Metheny-esque opener, “Ocean of Trees.” Like Metheny, he proves himself to be a richly lyrical player where the space between the notes is of equal importance.
Caron’s continued growth means that while he occasionally brings out his formidable chops as he does on the Brecker Brothers-ish “Turkey Loose on the Kit,” it’s never superfluous, always purposeful.
