La Menace / The Threat / Alain Corneau / 1977 / film review
After their great success with Police Python 357 in 1976, director Alain Corneau and actor Yves Montand are reunited for a similarly well-crafted and suspenseful film noir thriller.
Although the plot is something of a mess, with one improbable plot development repeatedly overtaken by an even more improbable plot development, the film has a great deal to commend it.
Corneau’s masterful appreciation of the aesthetics of film noir allows him to construct a compelling crime-thriller which should appeal to any enthusiast of the genre.

Corneau takes Nothomb at her word, and the film seems guiltier of ignorance than malicious intent.
Perhaps Corneau's intention was to build the film around Sylvie Testud's performance -- but even that is not enough to make the film particularly interesting.
Corneau has a reputation for neo-Tradition of Quality films, and little of his work has sounded interesting to me. This, at least, was something different.

Police Python 357 / The Case Against Ferro / Alain Corneau
Corneau chose to set the film in Orléans, the town in which he grew up as a child, and one which provides an appropriate backdrop for a tale of subterfuge and bloody double dealings.
Well scripted, well acted and well paced, Police Python 357 is the first of a series of quality crime-thrillers which Corneau directed in the 1970s and early 1980s which were both well-received by the critics and very popular with the cinema-going public.
The film features Yves Montand in one of his most compelling and hard-edged performances, a stark contrast with his other popular persona, that of the sophisticated and very amiable singer.

One Guy's Opinion   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Review: The same culture clash that served as the backdrop to the halting romance between Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson in “Lost in Translation” takes center stage--though romance is nowhere in sight--in “Fear and Trembling,” a cool, incisive, funny but also strangely melancholy film adapted by writer-director Alain Corneau from a novel by Amelie Nothomb.
That winningly precise tone is enhanced by Amelie’s reportage of her experiences as the picture proceeds in the words of Nothomb’s book, but even more by Testud’s marvelous performance, which makes the character not just a pitiful waif but curiously determined, almost courageous figure.
Like director Alain Corneau’s previous film “Tous les Matins du Monde” (1991), “Fear and Trembling” is a rarefied piece, sophisticated and somewhat distant emotionally, and so unlikely to appeal to the mass audience.

As with those two other Western perspectives on Japan, director Alain Corneau's story is about the comedy and trauma of East-West relations, in this case seen through the epic (and yet deeply personal) struggle of a young Belgian woman to "fit in" with a Tokyo corporation.
Amélie starts doing brilliant multilingual research-- in violation, as it turns out, of company procedures, defying a supervisor's hatred of "odious Western pragmatism." She is relegated to resetting calendars, to serving coffee, to being made to copy the same document over and over again, to months of cleaning restrooms.
New World) somehow gets the audience a few tentative steps closer to the "Japanese mind." It is, of course, only a partial success, but in the end, there is a fragile, right-brain appreciation of what is "most Japanese" in the film: Amélie's persistence through it all, to "save face."

A culture-clash comedy that takes the notion of Japanese otherness to ludicrous extremes, Alain Corneau's Fear and Trembling follows a year in the life of Amélie (Sylvie Testud), a Japanese-born Belgian who lands a job as a translator for a Tokyo multinational.
Amélie's dream of becoming "a real Japanese" assumes masochistic overtones as she eagerly submits to demeaning chores (endless photocopying, bathroom duty) while secretly harboring a crush on her bitch-on-wheels boss, Fubuki (Kaori Tsuji).
