Topic: Alakaluf

  IJBS
The Alakaluf of Tierra del Fuego were wiped out without ever having sought to understand the Whites, without ever even speaking to them or negotiating with them.
The Alakaluf were to be annihilated without conceding anything of their otherness.
In their singularity, which could not even conceive of the Other, the Alakaluf were inevitably vanquished.

The name Desolation is given to the northern member of the group terminating at Cape Pillar; the southernmost and largest island nearer to Clarence Island, is Santa Ines.
Inhabitants.—To the three geographical divisions correspond three well-marked ethnical groups—the Onas of the main island, the Yagans (Yahgans) of the south and the Alakalufs of the west.
Their language is closely allied to that called Old Tehuelche; it is a hard, slow-spoken speech, not at all resembling the soft, rapidly-spoken language of the Yagans, which has many points ' Notes of a Naturalist in South America (London, 1887).

Anne MacKaye Chapman - Economic and Social Structure of Selk'nam Society
The late-comers (especially the Selk’nam) had no natural bridge upon which to cross the Magellan Strait, so they either "hitched" canoe rides with the local Alakaluf, who were expert canoers, or they made some kind of raft.
The Selk'nam also bartered guanaco meat and skins with their Alakaluf neighbours, for whale blubber, according to Gallardo (1910: 291).
Gusinde (1974: 630; 1982 I: 130, 408, 413) wrote that they bartered guanaco capes, bows and arrows with the Alakaluf for necklaces of various types, seal skins and especially flint to ignite a fire.

Thus, the characteristic Indian movement is never sprawling or jumping (as with African Negroes), nor gliding or softly waving to and fro (as frequently in Oceania), but rather striding in a heavy regular pace.
Perhaps the most important knowledge to be derived from Fuegian songs is the fact that the "emphatic" singing manner, though as strongly conspicuous among the Ona as among any other Indians, is entirely absent among the canoe-faring tribes, the Yahgan and Alakaluf.
The characteristic type of-rhythm here described prevails in Yahgan and Alakaluf as well as in Ona music and, in fact, in any Indian music from North or South America.

Extinction on the Horizon for Indigenous Tribe in Chile
The Yagán tribe, native to southern Chile, lived off the natural resources of the ocean, gliding through the Tierra del Fuego waters in canoes and living in sealskin tents.
The Yagana people, along with the Selk'nam and Alakaluf, were among the last in the world to encounter Western civilization.
When the Chilean and Argentine governments began to explore Tierra del Fuego in the late 19th century, the indigenous population numbered around 10,000.

Prior to the first settlers in the late 1800s, Ushuaia and the surrounding area was home to the Yamana, Haush, Selk'nam and Alakaluf Indians for 6,000 years.
Like so many aboriginal peoples, interaction with the settlers proved to be disastrous - unknown diseases (eg, flu), attempts to "civilize" the indians and whiskey combined to quickly eradicate them; there are no pure-blood indians alive today.

But in the late 19th century, after vanquishing the Indians in northern Patagonia, the Argentine Republic was eager to populate Patagonia to bolster its territorial claims in the face of European and Chilean territorial ambitions.
