Alam Ara (played by Zubeida) is brought up among gypsies, but a chance visit to the palace allows cupid to strike as the young prince (Master Vithal) falls in love with her.
The film had taken months to complete (as opposed to the normal one month period required to finish a silent film) because of the technical difficulties of recording sound and also because of the secrecy with which the project was surrounded.
As a film Alam Ara had few technical or artistic qualities, but as a pioneering venture its centrality is undeniable.

"Alam Ara", which literally means Light of The World, was produced by Ardeshir Irani under the banner of Imperial Film Company of Mumbai, then Bombay.
Caste and class based fl and white "socials" of the 1930s, 40s and 50s gave way to glamour, colour and generous doses of romance by the 1960s and then to a period of tumult and anger in the 1970s.

The biggest thrust to film music came a year after "Alam Ara", with the debut in 1934 of perhaps the biggest figure in film music history - Kundan Lal Saigal (1904-1947) - with a movie for the Calcutta-based New Theatres.
