Alamance County was officially proclaimed a county in April of 1849.
Although some sources claim that Alamance was named by early German immigrants who came here from the "Alemanni" region of the Rhineland, others claim that the Indians called the Alamance Creek by the Indian word "Amonsi" or "Alamons," which meant "noisy river" or by another word which meant "blue clay".
Early in the nineteenth century, Alamance begin a textile industry that sustained the economy of the county and is considered the beginning of the textile industry that spread throughout the South.

The Alamance County Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) is composed of FCC-licensed Amateur Radio operators who have voluntarily registered their capabilities and equipment for public service communications duty.
The Alamance County ARES functions under this Emergency Plan under the direction of the Alamance County Emergency Coordinator (EC), who is apponted by the ARRL North Carolina Section Emergency Coordinator in consultation with the District Emergency Coordinator.
The primary responsibility of the Alamance County ARES is to furnishcommunications in the event of a disaster, when regular communications fail or are inadequate.
