The Lech, separating Alamannia from Bavaria, did not form, either ethnologically or geographically, a very strong boundary, and there was a good deal of inter-communion between the two races.
The chief family in Alamannia was that of the counts of Raetia, who were sometimes called margraves, and one of whom, Burkhard, was called duke of the Alaminnia.
Burkhard was killed in 911, and two counts palatine, Bertold and Erchanger, were accused of treason, and put to death by order of the German king Conrad I. In 917, Burkhard, count in Raetia, took the title of duke, and was recognized as such by King Henry I., the Fowler, in 919.

 Alamanni
Early in the 5th century the Alamanni appear to have crossed the Rhine river, conquered and then settled what is today Alsace and a large part of Switzerland.
Their kingdom (or duchy of Alamannia[?]) lasted until 496, when they were conquered by Clovis I at the Battle of Tolbiac, from which time they formed part of the Frankish dominions.
In a strange twist of fate, the word "Frankish" eventually gave its name to the Romance language French, while the Alamanni gave their name to the French word for "German" (Allemand).

Charles II, called Charles the Bald, King of France and Holy Roman Emperor, was the son of the emperor Louis the Pious and of his second wife Judith and was born in 823.
The attempts made by his father to assign him a kingdom, first Alamannia (829), then the country between the Meuse and the Pyrenees (839), at the expense of his half-brothers Lothair and Louis led to a rising on the part of these two.
The death of the emperor in 840 was the signal for the outbreak of war between his sons.

Allaman - Derivation of the Place Name   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
My argument is that since Allaman is precisely on the frontier of Alamannia, it was given this name because it was the gate to Alamannia.
If Allaman got its name in the manner sketched here, the naming must have taken place before 746, because afterwards the concept of Alamannia as a state was severely impaired.
Allaman, therefore, means “person from Alamannia.”  Alamannia, in turn, is thought to derive from Alle Mannen, “all men.” What exactly is meant by this appellation is uncertain.

All of Alemannia was placed under the Archdiocesis of Mainz (established 745).
The territory of the Alemanni remained a distinctive administrative unit, the DUCHY of ALAMANNIA (SWABIA).
In times of a partition of the Frankish kingdom, it could even become a distinct political entity, such as in 876, when CHARLES THE FAT became King of Alamannia (in 879 he inherited Italy, by 882 he was sole ruler of the East Frankish Kingdom, due to the death of his brothers).

 Swabia
Swabia (Alamannia), home of the Suevi and Alamanni
The region was known in Roman times as Alamannia, for the Germanic tribe of Alamans who settled there; it received its present name from the Suevi, who became amalgamated with the Alamanni by the 5th century.
The Suevi were actually a number of Germanic tribes, including the Marcomanni and Lombards, first mentioned by Julius Caesar in the first century B.C. After the 5th century, Swabia came under the control of the Frankish Empire, but its ruling house, the Merovingians, were not strong and by 689 Swabia was virtually independent.
