Ashburton railway station (station code: ASH) is on the Alamein line in Melbourne, Australia.
For a short period, this left the line to Ashburton (from Camberwell station) as the last remaining stretch.
It continued as the Ashburton line until June 28, 1948, when the line was extended 600m to Alamein, and became the Alamein line.

The El Alamein line was formed by pillboxes and strong points that had been built, shall we say, by accident.
By 11 July the Tel el Eisa mounds overlooking Alamein had been retaken, but due to enemy pressure the central salient was withdrawn and the lower half of the line was finally stabilized somewhat east of its original position.
The Alamein "line" was not made up of a coördinated series of deep trenches, such as you see in pictures of the First World War.

It was to go down in history as "the El Alamein position" and, before 1942 was out, would be not only the decisive turning point in the Desert War, but also in Britain's fortunes overall in the Second World War.
Reconnoitered by General Sir James Marshall-Cornwall earlier in the summer, the Alamein line ran for about thirty miles from the Mediterranean coast near the small railway station of EL Alamein to the cliffs edging the Qattara Depression, which was a vast area of impassable, low-lying salt marshes that effectively closed the Desert flank.
Four defended localities were prepared: the largest around EL Alamein; the next along Ruweisat Ridge; the third about Abu Dweiss, and the fourth at Deirel Shein.

The Alamein line is one of two branch lines, neatly tucked away in the mid suburbs, that feeds into one of the main lines on the suburban network.
I refer to these lines as 'branches' because on weekends and in off-peak times, the services are not run into town, instead terminating at a station on a main line and connecting with those services to the city.
The Alamein line is operated in off-peak times as a three-car shuttle between Camberwell and Alamein, normally with three comeng three-car sets during weekdays, and two sets on weekends.

 ERWIN ROMMEL
The Battle of Alamein, or more correctly the Second Battle of El Alamein, marked a significant turning point of World War II and was the first major victory by a British-led force over the German Army.
Faced with overextended supply lines and lack of reinforcements and yet well aware of massive Allied reinforcements arriving, Rommel decided to strike at the Allies while their build-up was still not complete.
The only direct line of approach for the 8th Army was from the south, where Rommel took over heavy defensive works known as the Mareth Line, originally constructed by the French to fend off an Italian attack from Lybia.
