 Alamillo Bridge
Originally proposed as twin bridges with a connecting viaduct, this design was to cross the Guadalquivir River in two locations, approximately 1 mile (1.5 kilometers) apart from each other.
Because of the the curves of the river, the bridges would have been situated in such a way that their tall inclined masts would have reached toward each other, forming an implied triangle that had it's apex far above the earth.
The impetus for the project was the 1992 World Fair, "Expo '92." The 1640 foot (500m) viaduct is an entrance gateway to the northern entrance of the Expo.

Making the Modern World - Is the future of bridges all suspended?
Recent talk of a road bridge between Europe and Africa, spanning the Straits of Gibraltar, has centred on a slightly different type of suspension bridge from the purely ‘hanging’ form we have discussed so far.
In the cable stay version of the suspension bridge, the deck is hung from diagonal cables that exert a force towards the towers as well as vertically.
In some ways, it is the cable-stayed bridge that represents the state-of-the-art in bridge-building at the beginning of the twenty-first century, but, with technology giving us lighter and stiffer materials to build with, there are already all-plastic bridges.

An example of these new possibilities is Calatrava's Alamillo Bridge, one of many crossing the Guadalquivir River in the southern Spanish city of Seville.

Like much of Calatrava's work, the Alamillo Bridge can be traced to a sculpture, in this case a work he called Running Torso, a stack of marble cubes balanced by a taut wire.
