Later, gravity surveys, in which minute changes in the gravitational field are detected, revealed a classic double ring crater with a central peak, greater about 180 km in diameter, very similar to craters on the Moon, Mercury and other bodys.
The seismic data reveal much of the crater's structure including the ~1 km-thick Tertiary sediments filling the crater, the crater edges, the peak ring, and the down-dropped blocks in the crater's zone of slumping.
With a diameter of at least 180 km and a depth of 45 to 6 5 km, Chicxulub is certainly one of the largest impact structures on Earth and perhaps one of the largest produced in the inner solar system in the last 4 billion years.
