Alan Ashman - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ashman was too late to prevent that season's relegation but the following season saw a bounce back, and the season after that, the Third Division championship.
Ashman's exploits had not gone unnoticed and, in 1967, he joined West Bromwich Albion F.C., leading them in a series of exciting cup runs, crowned by victory in the 1968 FA Cup.
The heights were short-lived and Ashman left the club to manage Workington F.C. and Walsall F.C. before settling for junior coaching and scouting roles at Derby County F.C. Hereford United F.C. and Swallows of Walsall.

BOING: News from 03 December 2002 - Alan Ashman R.I.P.   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Ashman was the victim of an ambitious board of directors who perhaps misjudged both the calibre of the players at his disposal and the rival managerial abilities of his successor Don Howe - the ex-Albion full back and then Arsenal coach.
Alan Ashman was born in Rotherham in 1928 and after a largely undistinguished playing career at Sheffield United, Nottingham Forest and Carlisle United he became a coach with non-league Penrith, before taking up the managers job at Carlisle.
But Alan Ashman sprang a tactical surprise on that May afternoon with Albion defending in depth and eschewing their normal attacking game for a strategy that would not be unfamiliar to watchers of Gary Megson’s team.

"Hundreds of Hats," Mayer's musical revue of songs with Ashman lyrics, only fitfully shows the writer at his best, and even then it's more as a reminder of how good a few of these songs were in their original settings.
Both of those songs are included in Mayer's revue, but so are a trunkful of efforts that were cut from the films or never made it to the stage.
But then, "Hundreds of Hats" is a production of the WPA Theater, the venue that Ashman and Menken co-founded andwhere they had their earliest successes, most notably "Little Shop." The WPA would seem a natural home for a definitive tribute, and probably should have bided its time.

Perhaps the biggest downside was the very sad loss of Howard Ashman, Alan Menken's lyrical partner of many years.
Much of the film is played for laughs and although there is a good baddy, the solid drama of something like Beauty and the Beast or The Hunchback of Notre Dame is missing because the lead couple are a bit wet, fading into the background of Williams' irrepressible Genie.
However, Menken, Ashman and Rice were still sufficiently inspired to produce plenty of memorable and often breathlessly exciting songs and Menken's score effortlessly mixes action, drama, a little comedy and a touch of exoticism.
