Alan Lightman is a novelist, essayist, physicist, and educator.
In 1999, Alan and Jean Lightman founded the Harpswell Foundation a nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide educational opportunities to disadvantaged children and young people.
Written with lyrical sparseness, hilarity mixed with sadness, the story of Bennet's struggle becomes a portrait of the emotional life of a scientist and his attempt to reconcile the absolutes of science with the vagaries of human experience.

Baltimore City Paper: FILM When It Comes to British Comedy, Habeas Corpus Waives the Rules
For those unfamiliar with English Common Law, habeas corpus is Latin for "you should have the body." In Alan Bennet's play of the same name, he presents a crew of horny middle-class Brits who seem to have just discovered that they have bodies.
Bennet's characters--including a self-righteous doctor, a sex-starved wife, a horny vicar, a flat-chested spinster, and a magnificently large-rumped scion of old Britannia--may have come to that conclusion a little late in life, but they're making up for lost time, unleashing a torrent of single entendres with a bawdiness rarely associated with the stereotypically uptight British.
Where the body is concerned, the rules of the game are clearly laid out by Bennet and his characters: He who lusts last lasts longest, and he who laughs most often laughs best.
