  EDUCATION REVIEW
Lynne Broadbent and Alan Brown have put together a well-written collection of essays on the current condition of Religious Education (hereafter referred to as RE) in the United Kingdom.
Broadbent (2002) highlights this problem by observing that "the QCA [Qualifications and Curriculum Authority] monitoring and OFSTED [Office for Standards in Education] inspection reports indicate that teachers lack confidence in promoting 'learning from religion', finding the first attainment target, 'learning about religions' more factually based and less ambiguous" (Broadbent and Brown, p.
Broadbent and Brown have certainly done a fine job of laying out many of the key issues and significant questions that educators must address in order to deal with the complexities of religious education.

CD Review of Alan Broadbent - You and the Night and the Music on A440 Music Group @ jazzreview.com
One of those benefits is the opportunity for Broadbent to record with A440 bassist Brian Bromberg, who, by the force of his presence, changes the feel of Broadbent’s trio through spur-of-the-moment interactivity, in a way similar to that of, for example, Scott LaFaro’s contributions to the Bill Evans trio.
Just as important as the way Broadbent plays is his elucidation of a song’s essence with chord substitutions, improvisational cliffhangers and apt allusions to other songs that conform to the song-at-hand’s structure.
As Broadbent notes in the liner notes, all of a sudden faces with a roadblock to the course of his final solo improvisation on “What’s New,” he comes up with the solution of “My Mama Done Told Me,” which he recalled from his days with Woody Herman’s big band.

Alan Broadbent is responsible for the string arrangements, and it was a responsibility fraught with hazard.
This is, in the final analysis, a jazz recording, and the use of chamber orchestras in a jazz context is always a dicey proposition.

From AMG: "Hearing this set of cool, restrained ballads, it is difficult to believe that this was singer Irene Kral's final recording and that she only had a year left to live before her death from breast cancer.
Throughout her second set of duets with pianist Alan Broadbent, Kral is almost up to the same emotional level as the previous Where Is Love.
Otherwise, Kral and Broadbent interact on five ballads, including two by Dave Frishberg and memorable renditions of "The Gentle Rain," "Something to Live For" and "If You Could See Me Now," plus a four-song "Antique Medley."  Alan Broadbent: You and the Night and the Music - PopMatters Music Review
The album, on excellent themes paced all within a general range called medium tempo, is named for an opening tune whose words invite parodic performance.
Broadbent's a somewhat chaste-toned player, at an opposite extreme alike from impressionism and from romantic expansive phrasing, but presumably his orchestral ambitions are satisfied by the other career, arranging and composing for big ensembles, which it's said has rather eclipsed awareness of his virtues as a pianist.
Broadbent plays with abandon nowhere; there is no relaxation and neither the silly words of "You and the Night", nor the words of any of the songs here seem to matter to him, or the fact that any of the tunes did happen to have words.
