The Germans began their invasion of the Low Countries on 8 May 1940 and the BEF eventually withdrew to Dunkirk where Operation Dynamo -- the evacuation of the BEF and French forces to Britain -- began on 26 May.
His reputation was tarnished by evidence of racism with the 1999 revelation of previously secret papers from 1947-1948 when he held the position of Chief of the Imperial General Staff.

 brookeb.htm
Viscount Alanbrooke was a son of Sir Victor Brooke, and so uncle of the Prime Minister [though they were near-contemporaries, great friends and very alike in appearance].
The Brookes of Colebrooke, as with most of the Anglo-Irish gentry, made little contribution to the intellect and to the imagination of the province, though this is less true of collateral branches, notably the Brookes of Dromovana.
Brooke was particularly well placed to comment upon these dramatic events, being second-in-command to Ross before the latter's death at Baltimore, and then succeeding him as commanding officer for the attack on that city.

Alternate History Discussion Board - Alanbrooke in charge one year earlier
Before that Alanbrooke (in OTL) had commanded an Armycorps in France 1940 and skillfully conducted a figthing retreat to Dunkirk and next was in charge of the British home defence army.
Alanbrooke was one of his subordinates, after all, and only handled the battle of the left flank because Gort chose him for the job.
Now I should note that point, of all Gort's officers it was Alan Brooke and no one else who was given the task, but it was nonetheless Gort who saw the danger of the Belgian collapse and was prepared for it.
