Guardian Unlimited Arts Arts features The Guardian profile: Alan Bennett
Bennett was born and grew up in Leeds, where his father was a butcher and amateur musician; his parents, funny and quick at home, were self-effacing, uneasy in public.
Bennett has been known to complain that he is not taken as seriously as some of his peers, and a 1998 National Theatre ranking of the century's greatest playwrights didn't even place him in the top 20.
Bennett soon learned the Larkin-esque lesson "that life is generally something that happens elsewhere", and the Talking Heads are set where life, by this assessment, doesn't happen: country vicarages, suburbs.

 Interview with Alan Bennett
Young Alan sought glamour in Leeds' double-decker trams, musty mystery in the artifacts of Grandma's parlor.
The son of a Yorkshire butcher, Bennett may be wishing against wish for a good honest job that bloodies the hands.
It begged for a wit that evokes nostalgia and distress, and Bennett became its not-quite-lyric poet: the bard of the drab.

'Untold Stories,' by Alan Bennett - The New York Times Book Review - New York Times
Alan, born in 1934, grew up in Leeds, where his father was a butcher; went to a state-financed grammar school; and in the manner of bright, hard-working boys back then, won a place at Oxford and earned a first-class degree.
He writes so well that his briefest diary jottings are entertaining, and together with its predecessor, the present volume is probably the closest thing we will ever have to an autobiography of this intensely private man who, though it goes against his very grain, also seems compelled to go public.
He's the literary equivalent of the Queen Mum, or would be if the Queen Mum had also been homosexual, quietly acerbic, a bit of a lefty and a conservative curmudgeon both, and a prose stylist of disarming grace and sly humor.

 The Butcher Boy
Ultimately, The Butcher Boy becomes one of the most terrifying films in recent years, if only because it takes such a balanced look inside an unbalanced mind, set in the context of the nuclear nightmare and Cold War politics that helped fuel Francie's personal crusade.
On the surface, The Butcher Boy is a story of a boy from a dysfunctional family who comes of age in small-town Ireland in the early 1960s.
The Butcher Boy is a rare thing: a film with a clear sense of the present danger and no pat solutions.

 BUTCHER BOY, THE/ ****
Even in the current sensitive climate, with the Jonesboro killings out of the news for only a few weeks, it is still possible to accept "The Butcher Boy" as twisted fun, and I did.
Based on the hugely successful novel by Patrick McCabe, which I confess I did not read, the film charters the journey of young Francie Brady(Eammon Owens) from being a boy in 1950s small-town Ireland mucking about with his friend Joe (Alan Boyle), to a mental patient whose acts are notorious in that same town.
Neil Jordan's "The Butcher Boy" continues a delightful recent trend of films whose meandering structures make them feel like dreams.

 Humor, horror define "Butcher Boy'
Even considered beside "classic" films about childhood, like "Forbidden Games," "The Butcher Boy" stands out as a remarkably honest portrayal of what people endure emotionally at the age of, say, 12 - and much of it is far from pleasant.
The same bitter spirit informs Neil Jordan's extraordinary film, "The Butcher Boy," a brilliant, exquisitely controlled exercise in fury disguised as dark comedy.
Red-headed Francie, along with his friend Joe (Alan Boyle), seems to have the run of the small Northern Irish town of Carn, where at least some of the adults are taken with the boy's outgoing personality and his verbal skills - he's wondrously adept at using words to charm and manipulate.

The last time this happened on Nelson Mandela Square was back in 1996, when Alan Pick opened South Africa’s first upmarket grill room with an integrated butcher shop that wet- and dry-aged its own beef.
