 John Williams - film composer
John Williams should need little introduction since he is almost certainly the most well-known film composer, and possibly to many people the best-known composer, period.
Williams' music is firmly from the classical tradition, based heavily on the style of the late-romantics such as Gustav Mahler and Richard Strauss.
Williams is rightly well-regarded for his ability to construct a tune and sound which perfectly complements the mood of a film.

William Stoner's might be yet another of Thoreau's "lives of quiet desperation" except that his strength of character, his relentless perception of himself and adherence to his own ideals, make his experience not only bearable but noble.
Perhaps the lack of recognition of "the plain John Williams" is traceable in part to the very principles and ideals that serve as the subject matter of much of his fiction, and are reflected in the precision and integrity of his "plain" style.
John was born in the small town of Clarksville, Texas, in 1922, and his early "literary influences" were the radio soap operas and pulp fiction magazines of the day.

Minority Report by John Williams @ Cinemusic   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
John Williams writes a score for the film that effectively does the same thing: it turns on his biggest fans and hands them a score that is decidedly atmospheric, dark and the anti-thesis of the safe, melodic, snuggle-fests of Williams' previous credits like Hook and even the recent Harry Potter and The Philosopher's Stone.
Williams employs a more sparse touch with his orchestrations, utilizing small string and brass clusters bouncing off each other, punctuated by beats of silence.
This album really is for well-rounded Williams fans (i.e., those who appreciate his approach here), and those who like their film music intense and punctuated with with dynamic flashes of fireworks ("Anderton's Great Escape" is worth the purchase alone).

Williams spent his early years studying the great drummers who had defined the art.
Even in his early performances and recordings with Davis, Williams proved that he had not only mastered the jazz drumming vocabulary of the masters who had preceded him but that he was ready to take jazz drumming to the next level.
Among his stylistic characteristics were the freeing up of the hi-hat from its traditional role of maintaining beats two and four and a more pulse-oriented approach to the ride cymbal, which foreshadowed the use of straight-eighth rock rhythms in jazz.
