Topic: Alan Kupperberg

In the News (Wed 15 Feb 12)

Comic creator: Alan Kupperberg   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
ALan Kupperberg attended the High School of Art and Design in New York City, graduating in 1971.
Kupperberg has also worked for Marvel Custom Comics, with clients such as Campbell's Soup, the U.S. Department of Energy, Sylvan Learning Center and The Dallas Times Herald.
Kupperberg has done illustrations for Archie Comics, National Lampoon, Cracked Magazine, Spy and McClannahan Books.

Retro Reviews (Introduction and Obnoxio the Clown #1)
The character was created by Larry Hama, who also edited this series, but Alan Kupperberg is the cartoonist, assuming writing, pencil, ink, colour and lettering chores.
Kupperberg relies much on the actual puns of Obnoxio and the behaviour and interaction of the characters as the attraction.
Alan Kupperberg’s art uses the comic-book styles of the time, rather than a cartoonish style, but it does work in the end with Obnoxio’s ridiculous, if consistent caricature.

 (ADD Review)
Rob Vollmar recommended this issue to me, and although I have some minor quibbles with its message (Jack Kirby thought of himself as a guy doing a job, I believe, not as some sort of deity of comics), its sincerity and high quality are unquestionable.
Alan Moore obviously loved Jack Kirby--and the artform, at least in the U.S., owes its very existence to the man born Jacob Kurtzburg.
Yet, for all that you could say to criticize the output of both these comics mainstays, they were there, and they both have recently shared their memories in the pages of TwoMorrows issues.

 1981
The fact that Hall, Kupperberg, and Weiss have (as yet) not signed DC contracts while Perez, Colan, and Infantino have would certainly not tend to discredit such a hypothesis.
Issue #209, courtesy of J.M. DeMatteis and Alan Kupperberg, had a little more substance to it, spotlighting as it did the four soon-to-be ex-Avengers, Vision, Scarlet Witch, Wonder Man, and (especially) the Beast.
I had hoped that "The Wrath of the Weathermen" in issue #210 would pit our heroes against hordes of irate meterologists out to get Thor (who was returning to active Avengering with this issue after sitting out the action since issue #202) for ruining so many of their forecasts.

The Comic Treadmill: Blue Devil 17, 30 & Annual 1 (1985-86)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Unlike Blue Beetle, writers Gary Cohn and Dan Mishkin, artist Alan Kupperberg and editor Alan Gold had a plan for what type of series this was going to be.
Now maybe I'm remembering through a haze of nostalgia, but I had left comics for a while and when I came back, Blue Devil and Alan Moore's Swamp Thing were the books I glommed onto first.
Still, after Paris Cullins left I really think it was the sub-par art of Alan Kupperberg that killed my favorite book.

I am familiar with Alan Kupperberg's art, and I think I can safely say that the art for the Monday to Saturday strips is not his.
Since the Sunday strips are done ahead of time, they look like they could have been done by Alan.
A bit of archive diving shows that from June 7 on, the dailies are tagged "Jay Maeder" rather than "Jay Maeder & Alan Kupperberg".

Taking place in a variety of exotic locales such as Nepal and East Africa, depicting a small group of men and a woman fighting against a super scientific conspiracy seeking world domination, this is an early example of a template that continues to define the X-Universe and WildStorm World.
I have limited knowledge of the printing techniques used in the reprint, but it does seem like this problem could have been avoided.

 The Transformers Archive
Pencils by: Frank Springer [#1-4], Alan Kupperberg [#5-6]
The second part's similarly mixed, with a well-scripted Shockwave and a potentially superb fight scene countered by Kupperberg's wooden pencils, and the silly oil-rig sequence that introduces G. Blackrock [looking uncommonly like a porn star] and Josie Beller [who looks about the least like a porn star as the poor girl will get].
The package: There's a nice, if slightly irrelevant, new cover from Andy [or is it Andrew now Transformers is a creditable nostalgia format?] Wildman, though it's rather bland, and not at all like his work on the title in the 1980s, or even much like his Dark Ages output.

Comment: This is another great example of Gene Day's inks bringing out the best in a Marvel Two-in-One penciller (in this case, the prolific Alan Kupperberg).
For such an inconsequential page in the book, Gene really went to town with the clouds in panel one, the bubbles in panel four, and the house and leaves in panel five.
