Alan MacGregor Cranston (June 19, 1914 – December 31, 2000) was a U.S. journalist and Democratic Party politician and United States Senator from California.
Cranston was Democratic Whip from 1977 to 1991 and an unsuccessful candidate for the Democratic Presidential nomination for the 1984 election.
The committee deemed Cranston's misconduct the worst among the Keating Five.

Cranston was an early advocate of ending the War in Vietnam, and championed journalists in 1973 when he introduced legislation which secured the right of reporters to keep their informants' identities confidential.
Cranston, who had accepted some $1 million in contributions from a constituent, Charles H. Keating Jr, the head of Lincoln Federal Savings and Loan Association, was one of a number of Representatives labeled "The Keating Five" and the only one to receive a formal reprimand in 1991.
Cranston left the Senate in 1993, and after successfully battling his cancer continued his crusades for nuclear disarmament and improved international relations in the private sector.

Ultimately, only three candidates survived long enough to win states: Mondale, Hart, and Jackson.

I mention for historical color that in 1934-6, Alan M. Cranston '36 (U.S. Senator) was a member of the house, and besides his distinction in track, he was voted by Beta Chi as having the "worst table manners"i.
In 1955-6 Donald David Guard was a member of the house, and after he graduated he formed the Pop group the Kingston Trio.
In 1972, Assistant Dean of Student Affairs Alan Strain's "Project Synergy" reopened the house as Synergy House, a cooperative theme house for "exploring alternatives", where students have worked on projects such as urban agriculture, solar energy, and co-operative enterprise.
