Mansfield   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Right-wing Labour MP Don Concannon - a strong supporter of the UDM, retired in 1987 and his replacement as Labour candidate was Alan Meale, a left-wing official in the official National Union of Mineworkers, led by Arthur Scargill.
Alan Meale scraped through in this former Labour stronghold by just 56 votes in the 1987 election, jointly the smallest majority of the election (along with Brecon and Radnor).
Alan Meale's career as a junior minister may have been shortlived and unsuccessful but at least he need no longer worry about his seat here in Mansfield.

Meale, a country-and-western fan, is proud of his position as self-styled parliamentary spokesman for the "Stand By Me" Club, a Commons organisation he runs to promote the famous song.
Meale, the former parliamentary private secretary (PPS) to John Prescott, the deputy prime minister, had been accused of breaching guidelines after lobbying his own department to promote a £14m scheme to build a football stadium in the green belt in north London.
Alan Meale, the environment minister, has given a House of Commons researcher's pass to his friend Haris Sophoclides, head of foreign lobby groups that have paid for Meale to visit Cyprus at least six times.

The extent of Mansfield MP Alan Meale's involvement in plans to build a £14million stadium for Barnet Football Club in Mill Hill has still to be revealed.
Letters written by Mr Meale about the public inquiry into the plans to build on Green Belt at Copthall Stadium have not been released, two weeks after Hendon MP Andrew Dismore asked the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions (DETR) for them.
While Mr Meale was unavailable for comment, Andrew Dismore said he is also awaiting a ministerial reply to his own parliamentary question on the same subject.

Hendon MP Andrew Dismore said this week that it was "inappropriate" for junior environment minister Alan Meale to lobby planning minister Richard Caborn in favour of Barnet FC's plans to build a £14million stadium on Green Belt land at Copthall Stadium in Mill Hill.
Yesterday Mr Meale admitted to involving himself in a second controversial planning application to build on Green Belt in Mill Hill -- some 140 miles away from his Nottinghamshire constituency.
"Alan Meale approached me about it and I thought it was inappropriate for him to be involved in my constituency," said Mr Dismore.
