Perlis was a keen educator and helped set up several computer departments at universities throughout the United States.
Alan J. Perlis was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1922.
In 1985 Perlis was given the IEEE Computer Pioneer Award for significant contributions to concepts and developments in the electronic computer field, which have clearly advanced the state of the art in computing.

Alan Jay Perlis (April 1, 1922 - February 7, 1990) was a prominent U.S. computer scientist.
Alan Perlis was a professor of Computer Science at Yale University.
In 1982, he wrote an article, Epigrams on Programming, for ACM's SIGPLAN journal, describing in one-sentence distillations many of the things he had learned about programming over his career.

ALAN J. Although Perlis's interests in computer science were extraor- dinarily broad, he maintained throughout his career a focus on programming languages.
During the 1960s, Perlis was involved in the definition of extensions to ALGOL, such as Formula ALGOL for manipulating formal mathematical ex- pressions, and LCC, a form of ALGOL for interactive incremen- tal programming.
Perlis was not content to be a builder of two important computer science departments and a leader in the design and study of new computer languages; as mentioned previously, he also played a major role in the formation of the ACM and was the founding editor of the Communications of the ACM.

Alan J. Perlis received a B.S. in chemistry from Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1943, and an M.S. (1949) and Ph.D (1950) in mathematics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.).
Perlis was active in the Association for Computer Machinery, becoming the first editor of Communications of the ACM (1958-1962), and president of the ACM from 1962 to 1964.
Perlis received the A. Turing Award of the ACM in 1966 and the AFIPS Education Award in 1984.
