Sledge Hammer (series)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
In 1986, with ABC languishing in third place in the battle of the network ratings, the beleaguered network decided to take a chance on a series so off-beat that its pilot script (by writer/series creator Alan Spencer) had appalled the execs at HBO who had originally intended to produce it.
The only concession Spencer would have to make to the now-nervous network was the addition of a laugh track—apparently the execs were worried that some wary viewers would somehow mistake the series—in which the leading character blows up a building with his handy bazooka in order to get a sniper off the roof—was a drama.
Certain that the series was going to be cancelled at the end of its first season, creator/writer Alan Spencer killed the entire cast off in the first season finale when Sledge attempted to defuse a nuclear bomb that, unfortunately, exploded.

While creator Alan Spencer's offbeat sitcom "Sledge Hammer!" clearly was a takeoff of Clint Eastwood's "Dirty Harry" character, the series itself was more of a hybrid of NBC's "Hunter" (which also featured a man & woman cop team) and ABC's "Police Squad!" (which also featured hilarious deadpan one-liners).
But if given the chance the show is sure to please simply for it's goofy dead-on satire and sharp, laugh out-loud dialogue.
Big ups to Alan Spencer, who joins the ranks of "Newsradio's" Paul Simms and "Roswell's" Jason Katims for striving to release their shows in quality DVD sets.
