The former is a case study in mindlessly opening an economy to the rapaciousness of global forces; the latter is, in Stretton's perhaps overly benign view, a more cautious and controlled transition from a command to a mixed economy.
The new economics that Stretton evokes in the book is free of that hoary old doctrine about individualistic humans rationally competing and therefore necessarily co-operating (Or, if they do, they collude) to generate wealth.

At 10.20 PM Darwin time an aircraft carrying Stretton, Dr. Rex Patterson (Minister for the Northern Territory), a surgical team, and medical supplies landed in Darwin.
Stretton was to infer that he possessed extraordinary powers, and this was to bring him into conflict with civil and judicial authorities in Darwin.
Stretton carried out his counter-disaster activities through local liaison and action committees, coordinated by Ray McHenry, First Assistant Secretary of the Department of the Northern Territory.

Alan goes on to point out that in Australia (and in the UK) the term "professional" is more often used in the narrower sense of "a person following a learned profession" such as medicine or engineering.
Alan is not saying that one is more correct than the other, only that there is a difference.

 Vietnam Era Australian Army Chief Warns Against Strike on Iraq
The top commander of Australia's army at the height of the country's engagement in the Vietnam War warned Prime Minister John Howard against following the United States into another military quagmire in Iraq.
In a letter published in The Sydney Morning Herald newspaper Friday, retired major general Alan Stretton criticized Howard and Foreign Minister Alexander Downer for indicating they would join a US-led bid to oust Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein even without UN approval for the campaign.
These included Norman Schwarzkopf, who led US forces in the 1991 Gulf War against Iraq, and retired Marine general Anthony Zinni, currently Washington's envoy on the Israeli-Palestinian crisis.

Major-General Alan Stretton reminded me that the Vietnam war began in earnest after the Tonkin Gulf Crisis of August 1964 where President Johnson was able to get Congress to overwhelmingly pass the so-called Tonkin Gulf Resolution.
