Alan Stuart Trammell (born February 21, 1958 in Garden Grove, California) was an American baseball shortstop of the Detroit Tigers from 1977 to 1996.
Trammell, commonly called "Tram", had a successful playing career with the Tigers, highlighted by a World Series championship in 1984 and an American League East division championship in 1987.
Despite his efforts, Trammell finished second to Toronto's George Bell in the MVP voting (332-311), which is considered by many one of the most controversial decisions in award history.

I think Trammell's issue is that there was nothing flashy about him (which, to me is a good thing - but bad for public P.R.) and that fact that, once he truned 30, he always seemed to miss a good chunk of the season.
I think Trammell suffers from something similar to Gossage - back in his day, his hitting was outstanding for a SS - now it's par for the course (just like in Goose's time, 30 saves was great, now anyone that pitches 60 innings or so on a decent team can get 30 saves).
Trammell to Whitaker might've been the best modern DP combo, especially due to their time together allowing them to be such a great combo.

Although I never met him, Trammell was by all accounts a good person, and hopefully he'll remain associated with the Tigers whether in the front office, as a coach, or as a commentator.
Back in the 80s I always felt Alan Trammell didn't get enough respect in the media, and when Tram finished 2nd to Taco Bell in the '87 MVP vote, I was even more perturbed.
My favorite Trammel memory is when he hit a two out grand slam in the bottom of the ninth to beat the Yankees 7-6 in a rather meaningless mid June game from the 80s.
