Founded by the Knights of Avis in 1298, the little town of Alandroal spreads around the ruins of its castle, dominated by the tall keep.
Terena is well known for its pottery, but the county´s crafts include objects in cork, wood, leather and horn, traditionally made by shepherds to be used in domestic life but now threatened by industrialization and the invasion of plastic.
Bread is used, across the Alentejo, not only as a snack but to soak up the delicious juices of stews in which garlic, coriander and olive oil play an essential part.

 IPPAR - Monuments and Sites
Built in the early 15th century, on King John I's command, this Castle situated at the Alentejo border came to fill the gap at the Guadiana River defensive line.
It was an essential piece in the national border defence, since the surrounding fortifications of Alandroal and Monsaraz were not enough to do it properly.
Still in the late 15th century, the main Alcayde appointed by King John II had consolidation works made in the Castle's structure; however, only in the 16th century major alterations were accomplished.
