BBC - Comedy Guide - Smith And Jones
Smith and Jones switched to BBC1 and returned to the now Alas-less sketch format, the first series being launched one week after the final Smith And Jones In Small Doses comedy playlet on BBC2.
Similar in format to Alas Smith And Jones, the pair were determined to maintain the new show's contemporary feel, and among the targets of the humour this time was the then current open-ended C4 chat-show After Dark, and modern phenomena such as squeegee-wielding windscreen washers at traffic lights and New Age travellers.
Smith and Jones performed a 'head to head' routine for A Royal Celebration (ITV, 14 November 1998), an all-star extravaganza performed for Prince Charles on the occasion of his 50th birthday.

BBC - Comedy Guide - Alas Smith And Jones
Alas Smith And Jones - the title being a punning twist on the popular US cowboy series Alias Smith And Jones - was an unpretentious sketch show that, at times, touched the heights.
The principal difference, though, were the 'head to head' - sequences, in which the two men sat face-to-face and pursued abstract conversations about any subject under the sun, Smith being the rather superior know-all (who actually knew very little), Jones, terminally dense, speaking with a 'thicko' voice and employing a bizarre logic and insatiable curiosity.
Although a double-act, Smith and Jones were not typical of the genre: either - or both, or neither - could play the funny-man or the foil, depending on the material.

Alas Smith And Jones is probably best remembered for the "head to head" sequences, where a pompous "know it all" (Mel Smith) pontificates about a topical subject while his rather dim friend (Griff Rhys Jones) tries, usually unsuccessfully, to make sense of what's being said.

Comedian Griff Rhys Jones, and theBob of To the Baltic with Bob, would fall, decidedly, into the "gentlemen" category of mariner: enthusiasts, amateurs in the original sense of the word and therefore, naturally, inept sailors.
(Rhys Jones pins the blame for his obsession with all things nautical on Arthur Ransome and on his late father, who made the freezing West Mercia boat park the family's home from home.) Luckily for Rhys Jones, his mate Bob is a marginally worse yachtsman.
The wayward sea, estuary and canal route through Holland, Denmark, Latvia, Finland, Russia and the Turko Archipelago--"so topographically complex that it was expedient not to draw it"--results, predictably, in a slew of map-prodding nautical mishaps and encounters with intransigent boat repairers, officials, restaurateurs and Estonian lap dancers.

Smith, best known for his comic turns on Not The Nine O'Clock News and Alas Smith and Jones, has been receiving praise for his straight role as Britain's wartime leader in Allegiance, which portrays an unlikely friendship with Irish rebel Michael Collins.
The play is heading to Edinburgh's Fringe and, as we report today, Smith is furious that the Scottish Executive smoking ban means he won't be able to light up a trademark cigar to complete his impersonation of Churchill.
Exemptions should have protected personal liberty and artistic integrity - the former by permitting smoking in private clubs, the latter, as may yet be the case in England, by allowing smoking on stage when the material justifies its inclusion.
