But from that day on, the remarkable Russian-Alaska capital of New Archangel would be known as the American village of Sitka, to serve as Alaska's capital for the next 30-plus years.
Alaska had been claimed for Russia as early as 1741 after Vitus Bering sighted the mountain he named St. Elias and landed near Yakutat for a cursory exploration.

According to an interpretive sign posted at Castle Hill by the Alaska Division of Parks and Outdoor Recreation, the Russian flag got stuck during the lowering, and then, after being freed by a soldier who climbed up in a sling to loosen it, the flag was dropped and blown onto the Russian soldiers' bayonets.
Not surprisingly, the very first Alaska Day celebration was held in Sitka in 1949.
