 Northern Exposure
And so we resolved to return, with three objectives uppermost on our agenda: First, we were determined to drive all the way "to the top" – across the Brooks Range and alongside the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) to Prudhoe Bay.
The local joke is that "Anchorage is just a half-hour’s drive from Alaska." But take that half-hour drive south to the Turnagain Arm, look up at Chugash Range and across at the Kenai Peninsula, and you’ll encounter a whole ‘nother place.
We returned from our Summer 2000 visit to western Canada and Alaska with an appreciation that even five weeks on the road was scarcely enough time to do justice to this vast and magnificent landscape.

Defenders of Wildlife - New Drilling Proposal Threatens Kenai National Wildlife Refuge, Alaska
While Bush Administration's plans to drill for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge continue to meet resistance in the Senate, drilling activity has exploded in areas not needing Congressional approval - including a plan to plow roads and drill pads into a pristine corner of another Alaskan wildlife refuge - Kenai.
The Kenai peninsula is said to be "little Alaska" because its diverse topography house every geologic feature and wildlife habitat found in the rest of Alaska - and most of the species as well.
The refuge unfortunately, has also mirrored Alaska politics, and in the 1950's part of the refuge was opened to oil and gas drilling - Alaska’s first oil field - resulting in hundreds of thousands of gallons of toxic spills.

Crude Behavior - Arctic National Wildlife Refuge - Wildlands - Sierra Club
Though some say the answer to our nation's energy needs lie below the surface of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, this spectacular landscape need not-- and must not-- be sacrificed for a few barrels of oil.
The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is public land, which belongs to all Americans and should be protected for future generations to enjoy, explore, and discover.
The wildlife and the native culture that depend upon the coastal plain are at risk because it is precisely this coastal plain that Big Oil wants to open to drilling and development, claiming that vast quantities of oil lie beneath the fragile tundra.
