AVSIM Special Feature: Bush Flying in FS2002
Bush flying is a form of flying that was born out of need to move supplies for the early settlers up in the northwestern areas of Canada and of course Alaska, but there also were the early flyers that explored and/or resupplied the remote areas of Africa, South America, Antarctica, and Australia as well.
Bush flying got its earliest start in 1920 in Canada, but it wasn't until the early part of the 1930s that specialized aircraft were being designed for operations on land, water, or snow—and ironically many of the aircraft types based on those early designs are still flying.
Flying the bush today (Canada and Alaska) is often written about and presented in a romantic fashion, often telling of the daring adventures and rouge spirit of the bush pilot; but in fact, the bush pilot is usually a highly skilled pilot flying highly maintained specialized aircraft.

WASHINGTON - The Bush administration exempted 300,000 acres of Alaska's national forest from the so-called "roadless rule" on Tuesday, implemented in 1999 to prevent mining and timber companies from building roads on 58.8 million acres of federal forest land.
The move will open the territory to possible logging fear environmentalists, but forest service officials said the move is positive for the state economy.
Alaska's governor, Frank Murkowski said the rule had locked away portions of the Tongass from major timber development and was "unlawful and unwise," whereas John Passacantando, executive director of Greenpeace USA, saw the exemption as a heretic move by the Bush administration intent on "gutting the last pristine temperate rain forest" in the United States.

Alaska Bush communities, as defined for purposes of the policy, are rural Alaskan communities of less than 1,000 residents that are isolated from larger cities by rugged terrain and harsh weather conditions.
The Alaska Bush Policy was based on the principle that duplicative proposals for facilities in the Alaska Bush communities are mutually exclusive because one facility could provide all the services provided by either party, and there was no public interest benefit in the construction of duplicate MTS facilities.
It also noted that the Alaska Bush Policy was formulated prior to the advent of MTS competition, and is based on a regulatory policy designed to prevent non-dominant carriers from investing in facilities at their own expense to compete with a carrier with an established facilities monopoly.
