 Alastair Sim (1900-1976)
Alastair went to school in Bruntisfield and to Gillespie's School, where his father was a JP and a governor of the school.
Alastair had a cameo as a phony medium duping a gullible old lady who is trying to communicate with the spirit of the father of Edward Everett Horton, a mild mannered and naive reverend who is the new secretary of a country squire.
Alastair has several wonderful scenes, including one where he's in the lair of the gang and, answering the phone, pretends to be one of them, not realizing Inspector Hornleigh is on the other end of the line, disguising his voice.

DARLING: The hundred and fifty pounds going into fuel payment is paid before Christmas, it's not taxable, it isn't taken account from benefits which it would be if you lumped it into the pension income generally.

Political Satire and Humour | UK Department of Social Scrutiny
Alastair Darling, the Secretary of State for Transport is championing a bold new move to split all the rail infrastructure currently under the control of Network Rail "straight down the middle" in talks between the state-owned business and train operating companies later today.
Under Alastair Darling's plans, stations will be leased out to a holding company which is 51% owned by the Treasury with minority shares issued to a rail regulator drawn randomly from a hat at midnight on the 23rd Sunday of the year.
Speaking at the launch of his plans, Alastair Darling said the proposals represented "a fantastic simplification of the current system, which is old and therefore bad".

Alastair Darling, the secretary of state for transport, must be one of the few cabinet members whose job would be made easier if Britain were to slip into recession.
Mr Darling's criticism of London's proposed £5-a-day charge to enter the city centre has more to do with Labour's hardening opposition to Ken Livingstone's mayoralty than a major policy shift.
Unless Mr Darling acts it will be a case of jam today and jam tomorrow.

Alastair Darling has said that the Government would not need to install its own tracking equipment in cars as part of its plans to introduce satellite-based congestion charging across the country.
Transport secretary Alastair Darling has outlined proposals for a nationwide road user charging scheme, where drivers would have satellite tracking devices installed in their cars, and would be charged between 2p and £1.34p per mile depending on the roads they drove on.
In the transport review, Alastair Darling backed the principle of a national road user charging scheme in principle but said that it was too large in scope to proceed with all at once; instead he gave his backing to starting with local schemes.

The Secretary of State for Transport, Alastair Darling, today announced to the House of Commons that the government had decided that there would be no third runway in the immediate future because of the doubt about achieving the minimum air quality standards at Heathrow.
He reminded the House that the previous Conservative government appeared to have no air transport policy and that it was an initiative from BAA to request planning permission for T5, with no prior consultation or involvement by government.
"I also asked Alastair Darling that, if there was to be an attempt to gain additional runway capacity by mixed mode, it was essential that he consulted carefully and that it was unacceptable to allow planes to take off to the east on the northern runway.

 Britain: Labour's privatisation of roads
The private toll road would, he said, extend to motorists the “choice” that was now being extended to parents in their choice of schools for their children or to patients for their hospital treatment.
For the mass of the population, it means ever-greater rises in the cost of living (particularly for the poorest families for whom transport is one of the largest costs), the daily misery of gridlock in the most car-dependent country in Europe, and threats to health and the environment.
Darling proposes a 51-mile toll motorway to run alongside the existing M6 motorway between Birmingham and Manchester, to relieve congestion along the route that carries 140,000 vehicles a day.

 Inside Bikes News
News that Transport Secretary Alastair Darling is considering a new ‘congestion-busting carpool lane on the M25’ has led to the British Motorcyclists Federation asking that motorcycles be included in such a scheme.
Following approaches from the BMF over the trial of a High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lane on the M1, the Highways Agency confirmed that motorcycles would be allowed in these lanes, so despite the subtle name change to ‘carpool lane’, the BMF still expects the same rule to apply.
The section of motorway under consideration is already being widened to provide either five or six lanes in each direction and the carpool lane could help make the best possible use of this additional capacity say the Highways Agency.
