Alastair was always ambiguous about fame and never signed autographs.

Sim remains an imperishable Scrooge, convincing whether in a state of panic over the visitation of ghosts, or expressing childlike glee when converted to the joys of the season.

Alastair went to school in Bruntisfield and to Gillespie's School, where his father was a JP and a governor of the school.
Alastair had a cameo as a phony medium duping a gullible old lady who is trying to communicate with the spirit of the father of Edward Everett Horton, a mild mannered and naive reverend who is the new secretary of a country squire.
Alastair has several wonderful scenes, including one where he's in the lair of the gang and, answering the phone, pretends to be one of them, not realizing Inspector Hornleigh is on the other end of the line, disguising his voice.

Sim's stage debut in 1930 was as a messenger and sentry in Othello, a production in which Peggy Ashcroft and Paul Robeson played the leads; he then spent two years at the Old Vic.
In 1954 Sim reached new heights as a comic actor in the dual role of Miss Fitton, the dubious headmistess of St Trinian's, and Miss Fitton's gangster brother, Clarence.
His career prospered throughout the 1950s; his last film appearance was in Escape form the Dark in 1976, the year of his death.

By far the best one the Alastair Sim version which is titled "A Christmas Carol" but also shows up occassionally as "Scrooge" (the opening credits show "A Christmas Carol" and the closing credits show "Scrooge").
As a young boy, I was very much impressed by the story and especially by Alastair Sim's portrayal of Ebeneezer Scrooge.
His sneering looks of disdain and rude rebuttals are enough to give you the measure of the man. Likewise, after his visit with the three Christmas spirits, his metamorphasis as a redeemed believer is a joy to watch.

However, most people seem to agree that the definitive Scrooge - the one closest to Dickens' original conception - is probably Alastair Sim in the 1951 version of A Christmas Carol, which was originally released in England as Scrooge.
All in all, the Alastair Sim version has a slight edge over the Reginald Owen version in terms of production value but the latter does possess a more menacing supernatural quality.
Still, there are many haunting sequences in the Sim version too, particularly Michael Hordern's first appearance as the wailing, tormented ghost of Jacob Marley.
