Alaunus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In Celtic mythology, Alaunus was a Gaulish god of the sun, healing and prophecy.
Theo Vennemann compares this god’s name with Basque arau ‘order, regularity’, which he asserts is from Proto-Vasconic Alaunu meaning ‘order.’ This view is not widely held.
If the theory is correct that Alaunos is in fact a personification of ‘Brilliance’, this allow one to draw parallels with such beings in the mythology of other cultures as Coeus, Polus, Hyperion, Lucifer, Zeus.

MAGNVS PORTVS   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
In book II chapter ii, Ptolemy describes the coastal outline of Britain, giving the latitude and longitude of a number of promontories, river-mouths, peninsulas and bays, and his paragraph headed "the description of the south side below which is the Oceanus Britannicus", gives the names of several features on the southern English coast.
Here, between the rivers Iscas and Alaunus to the west and the Trisantonis¹ to the east is a place known as Magnus Portus or "the Great Harbour", which must refer to the natural harbours between Portsmouth and Chichester.
The Iscas is certainly the River Exe in Devon, the Alaunus is yet to be identified but probably flows through the county of Dorset, and the Trisantonis has been equated with the River Arun in Sussex.

 Alauna
Further, there is the matter of Ptolemy's River Alaunus (II 3 3), which as PNRB notes 'should be the Axe'.
Alaunus would be on Ptolemy's Alaunus river (apparently the Axe) along Margary 49 which would place it at Seaton's Honeyditches Roman port and settlement SY2490.
Ptolemy's river Alaunus is not necessarily the old name of the Axe.

Episode 245:  Arialis gets some unwelcome news
Alaunus frowns sadly, "Those wishes that she is able to convey." He turns slightly and looks out over the city telling her, "At night, this could almost be home, eh?"
Alaunus frowns, "She was more sorely injured in the crash than she let any of us know.
Alaunus glares back, not backing down, "If you really wish to find her, you should be able to.

Episode 251:  Street School, Elves & Annoucements
Over his shoulder, Alaunus looks at her saying, “All that needs to be known.” He steps between the stones and fades from view.
Alaunus moves quickly over to the two of them, "Enough for now....." He puts her a hand on Arialis pulling her away.
Alaunus says adamantly, "No, this is NOT her choice to make.

Naurum   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Perhaps another lacuna common to all MSS between Tamaris and Naurum would explain the poor representation of south-western rivers.
If we take the N of Naurum to represent an aggregated Al, then Alaunus fits well between the Tamar and the Avon as the Axe.
The reverse is seen in Ptolemy's Toliatis for Tanatis, a dis-aggregation.

Seasonal Spuffy - Fic: Your Face Appears in Mine; PG-13; Spike/Buffy; 1 of 1
The next night she pretends like she isn’t really thinking about him, not listening with her ears sharpened like pencils for the tread of his shoe, or the puff of his cigarette.
Her frustration gets the better of her when she happens upon a nest of murk-gathering, dirt-mongering vampires in a crypt in Alaunus Cemetery.
Her vampire radar zings and zaps about like popping corn in oil, so much so that as she’s stepping from the crypt she doesn’t notice him until, as she’s brushing the dust off her rather nice and new red corduroy trousers, that a delicate finger whispers across her hair.
