 CHAPTER 4 THE ALAWIS
The 'Alawis have survived as a distinct group in spite of repeated persecution and the threat of extinction by the Sunni majority and rulers who considered them pagans and heretics who were not eligible for the status of a protected religion.
During the Crusades, the 'Alawis were accused of favouring the Franks, and were punished for it by the victorious Sunni Ayyubis and Mamluks of Egypt who saw their victory as a good excuse to try and annihilate all Shi'as in their kingdom.
In 1220 the 'Alawis were almost eliminated by the Sunni Kurds migrating from the north-east and by the Isma'ilis attacking from the south.

The Alawi Capture of Power in Syria - article by Daniel Pipes
The 'Alawis did not "plan for a future takeover" years in advance, nor was it mere chance that the Ba'th Party was "heavy with minorities." 'Alawi power resulted from an unplanned but sectarian transformation of public life in Syria.
The 'Alawi officers promoted by 'Umran realized that their overrepresentation in the upper echelons of the army was resented by the majority, and they seem to have rallied around J'did, by then the most prominent 'Alawi officer in the Syrian army and the person deemed most likely to preserve their high but precarious position.
The solidarity of [Jadid's] 'Alawi supporters seems to have been further cemented by the feeling that the issue had assumed a confessional character and that their collective and personal positions were at stake.

For them, the rule of an Alawi is the rule of a disbeliever, and it was this conviction that they carried with them in their futile insurrection of February 1982.
In 1973 the Alawi religious shaykhs stumbled over one another in their rush to affirm that the Alawis were Muslims, that they were Twelver Shi'ites through and through, and that other beliefs attributed to them were calumnies.
The Alawi religious shaykhs in Syria feared that their coreligionists in Lebanon might slip from their grasp, and they were also mindful that some Lebanese Alawis still hoped to secure official recognition of the Alawi community as separate and distinct from all others.

As a young Muslim female, belonging to the Alawi sect, I differ greatly to your comments, that we are not Muslim, females do not partake in religious activities, and the life of a Alawi, is a life of loose morals and values, a group of lost souls wandering the mountainous regions of Syria.
The common misconception about the Alawi sect is that they do not practice their faith, they have borrowed elements from the Christian faith, and live a secular life, this is the confusion.
Unfortunately, within the Alawi sect there is a CULTURE of having a lax attitude towards practising one's faith.

The thing is we are talking about those Alawis that support the regime, and the Alawis that are at the head of the regime, and then the Alawis that the regime has exploited to the maximum.
It is those people that really hate Alawis, and it is them who have control of mosques across syria and they enjoy the same benefits and advantages with the regime because they both are the two sides of the coin.
However, being an Alawi myself, I think I have the right to give my assessement of those Alawis that have high position in the country, and I must tell you that I despise each one of them, for no matter how rich they have become, they are still savages, and without honour.
