It is generally divided into three regions: Upper Albania, from the Montenegrin frontier to the river Shkumbi; Lower Albania, or Epirus, from the Shkumbi to the Gulf of Arta; and Eastern Albania, to the east of the Schar-Dagh chain.
Albania shares with Greece the peculiar phenomenon of subterranean rivers; the waters of the lake of Jamina flow through one of these underground channels into the Gulf of Arta, and this gave rise to the myth that here was the entrance to the infernal world of the ancient Greeks.
Near it are the ruins of the temple of Dodona, the cradle of pagan civilization in Greece.

Most of the Greek Minority in Albania live in southern Albania, a region called Northern Epiros by most Greeks, referring to the historical state of Epiros which was divided between Albania and Greece in 1913.
Greece brought the issue to the Council of the League of Nations, which referred it to the Permanent Court of International Justice and in 1935, this court decided that Albania had to restore the right of its minorities to establish their own schools.

Until few years ago, Albania was definitely a "no go" place because of heavy risk of criminality targeting foreigners, but recently I heard different opinions about it and now it looks it is become a "doable" country, at least on the main coastal western road and in the main cities.
If you enter/exit Albania from/to Montenegro, we were told to use (and we did) the border crossing south of the lake of Skodher and to avoid the border crossing north of the same lake.
Albania sounds like somewhere where we may be able to finally get ourselves into some offroad terrain (after all the road riding from Western Europe to get there).
