ORTHODOX EASTERN CHURCH [Orthodox Eastern Church] community of Christian churches whose chief strength is in the Middle East and E Europe.
Orthodox acceptance of the seven councils resulted in the exclusion from their communion, on grounds of heresy, of the Nestorian, Jacobite, Coptic, and Armenian churches; it also involves holding a sacramental doctrine of grace ex opere operato (see grace) and of veneration of the Virgin Mary, two points differentiating the Orthodox from Protestants.
The number of Orthodox churches recognizing one another as such is indefinite because of the fluid state of the relations of Orthodox bishops in countries to which communicants have emigrated.

The church suffered during the Second World War, and in the communist period that followed, especially after 1967 when Albania was declared an atheist state, and no public or private expression of religion was allowed.

Tension reached its climax in 1907 when a Greek Orthodox priest refused to officiate at the burial of an Albanian in Hudson, Massachusetts on the grounds that, as a nationalist, the deceased was automatically excommunicated.
He was now both head of the Orthodox Church in Albania and leader of a liberal political party, the main opposition to the conservative forces of Ahmet Zogu (1895-1961), who were supported primarily by the feudal landowners and the middle class.

The committee for the defence of autocephaly of the Albanian Orthodox Church on August 1st launched a protest to Istanbul Oecumenical Patriarchate Fanari, to Patriarch Bartholomew, against the nomination of three Greek bishops as metropolitans of Gjirokastra, Vlora and Korca.
The Istanbul Patriarchate recognised the autocephaly of the Albanian Orthodox Church in 1936.

The Albanian Committee for the Defence of the Albanian Orthodox Autocephalous Church has issued a protest to the oecumenical Patriarchy of Istanbul, Fanari, and to patriarch Bartholomew against the appointment by the patriarchy of three Greek bishops as metropolitans of Gjirokastra, Vlora and Korca.
The Patriarchy, fully violating the status of the Albanian Orthodox Autocephalous Church of 1929, an autocephaly recognised in 1936, consecrated a few days ago, without the approval of the Albanian Church and State, three Greek bishops for three dioceses in Albania.
The Albanian Orthodox Autocephalous Church is called by the entire Albanian people 'The National Autocephalous Church of Albania'.
