United States Department of Energy National Laboratories - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Most of the DOE national laboratories are actually federally funded research and development centers administered, managed, operated and staffed by private corporations and academic universities under contract to DOE.
Additional success was had at the University of Chicago in reactor research, and at other academic institutions spread across the country.
Each national laboratory would generally be centered around one or many expensive machines (such as particle accelerators or nuclear reactors).

Summary of Findings From a Pollution Prevention Workshop on Mining   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
The goal of the WREAFS workshop held on April 1-2, 1992 in Albany, Oregon at the Albany Research Center was to introduce key pollution prevention concepts to the BOM health and safety officers.
In order for researchers to understand raw material and disposal costs, the health and safety officers should establish a charge-back system which require each researcher to be responsible for the full costs involved in their projects.
Researchers may be reluctant to accept materials from waste exchanges to use as feedstocks because of the potential for contamination (i.e., a chemical may not be as pure as claimed) and would destroy their process.
