 Australian Kite Association - Soaring
The bird that soars in a gale has a deeper concavity of wing than one that soars in a moderate breeze, from which I deduce that the velocity of rotation of the vortex must have somwe point of maximum efficiency.
Each form of soaring wing is evolved by the average velocity of wind in the latitudes frequented by the bird.
Either the soaring machine must be started from such a height that the weight can be approximately adjusted to the existing wind; or, the weight must automatically adjust the negative angle of the propeller as the wind increases.

FLYING MACHINES - William Paul Butusov   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
Whatever the truth of that assertion, he did construct a large gliding machine in 1896 with a wing area of 266 sq.
The launching trestle was a substantial piece of construction as well as a source of trouble in launching the Albatross glider, for at least two attempted launches failed due to the failure of the trestle to allow the Albatross to slide down and take off.
In addition to the name Albatross, the design of Butusov's Albatross was remniscent of the 1867 Artificial Albatross of Jean Marie Le Bris.

This prodigious machine is directed and guided by a tail seven palmi long, which is attached to the knees and ankles of the inventor by leather straps; by stretching out his legs, either to the right or to the left, he moves the machine in whichever direction he pleases....
The machine in question had a 10 foot span, and was 2 ft. across in the widest part of the wing; the length of tail was 3 ft. 6 ins., and the span of tail in the widest part 22 ins., the total sustaining area being about 14 sq.
At the outset the machine was fastened to the cart by a rope running through the rails on which the machine rested, and secured by a slip knot on Le Bris's own wrist, so that only a jerk on his part was necessary to loosen the rope and set the machine free.
