It contrasts with his previous album, Heaven and Hell, which is classically inspired and choral, while Albedo 0.39 has blues and jazz overtones.
The title track, "Albedo 0.39" is an atmospheric track building on waxing and waning synthesizer chords and arpeggios, while a voice with a British accent narrates various physical properties of the Earth, such as its mass, length of the year in various measurements, and, finally, its albedo (amount of light reflected back into space).
Albedo 0.39 is an album by the artist Vangelis, released in 1976.

 ZIJN GROOTSTE SUCCESSEN (GREATEST HITS)
As a listener, space is exactly what you need between works as different as “Beaubourg” and “So Long Ago, So Clear” and “Albedo 0.39.” Zijn Grootste Successen (or Greatest Hits) goes beyond the hits to capture the more interesting moments from his greatest albums.
Yes, China and Opera Sauvage would have transformed the landscape considerably, eclipsing the inclusion of a “Sword of Orion” or “Ballad,” but they’re not space albums in the sense of an Albedo or Beaubourg.
What surprised me is how the works from Spiral rose to the fore and grabbed my attention; the title track and “Dervish D.” from that album in particular stood out.

 "ELSEWHERE": Vangelis' compilation albums
The first RCA compilation album, originally released on LP in 1978, later reissued on CD compiles a few tracks the "Heaven and Hell", "Albedo 0.39", "Spiral" and Beaubourg albums, Vangelis' entire repertoire on that particular label at the time.
A new version of the album was rereleased a few years after, with a totally different cover, that more resembles the style of the artwork of previous J&V releases, most notably the Private Collection series (albums and singles).
Actually, the Vangelis LP isn't really a compilation as most of the albums from this series were, but it's the Earth LP repackaged with an extensive booklet, texts in Italian and a number of never before seen pictures from the 70s and 80s.

Vangelis : The Collection - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
All of the cuts represent the albums Albedo 0.39, Spiral, and Beaubourg, offering an entertaining trip through his jazz, rock, and new age-infused synthesizer work.
The three albums from which these cuts are taken managed to spawn their own diversity even though the overall method in which Vangelis used his synthesizers is quite similar throughout, which is an attribute that has followed him throughout his career.
While it shouldn't be regarded as a staunch gathering of all his best work, it should be looked upon as an excellent way in which to explore the distinguishing characteristics of each individual album from which the tracks originate.

Vangelis produced 2 brilliant albums, "See You Later" & "Soil Festivities", both eccentric as hell, a couple of _weird_ ones ("Invisible Connections" and "Beaubourg"), a few reasonable ones ("Albedo 0.39, Spiral, Earth...) and a lot of overbearing dross (anything with the words "Jon Anderson" on the back :-)).
The collection albums do not necessarily have the exact same versions that are included on the album or 12" releases.

 Collectors' Choice Music
The astronomically themed 'Albedo 0.39' (1976) has a beautifully spacey synth sound to match the subject; 'Spiral' (1977) includes atmospheric gems like 'To the Unknown Man'; 'Beaubourg' (1978) is an expressionistic tribute to the ultra-modern art museum in Paris of that name.
Three pioneering albums from a giant of electronic music.

Enigma Message Board - What do you think of Vangelis?
I don't have the album called "Albedo 0.39" but what I have heard from some compilation albums it sounds pretty cool.
"1492" is the only album I have of his, and as others mentioned, it's great and might be a nice place to start.
It is on this album you can find "Pulstar" the song that is the last track on T.A.A.W.'s album.

A version of "Pulstar", from the album Albedo 0.39, was an early theme for ESPN's "SportsCenter" program.
They had a hit single in Europe called "Rain and Tears", and are considered pivotal in the development of progressive rock and concept albums, especially because of their ground-breaking composition 666 (The Apocalypse Of John,13/18).

Resonant male voices slowly intensify above martial percussion, serving not only as a subtle allusion to the ancient deity from which the planet Mars derives its name, but also as a crafty Greek chorus signaling humanity's ages-old longing to explore—and conquer—the heavens.

VANGELIS Albedo 039 reviews and MP3
The track ‘Albedo 0.39’ is so relaxing and a great way to end the album after the frenzy of ‘Nucleogenesis (Part Two)’.
Apart from "Aplha" and "Pulstar", which probably everybody knows, I think "Albedo 0.39" and "Nucleogenesis" are also peaks in this man's career.
The 2-part ‘Nucleogenesis’ is another explosive number: starting with a solemn motif played on church organ (or a synth that sounds like one), it later turns into an overtly splendorous section that brings back the exciting bombast of ‘Main Sequence’ – here it is, another climatic point in this album.

 Vangelis - Newage music artist
Vangelis moved to London in 1974, where he installed his own music studio and where he continued his creative work: "Heaven and Hell" (1975), "Albedo 0.39" (1976), "Spiral" (1977), "Beaubourg" (1978), "China" (1979) and "See You Later" (1980), quality and successful works, some of them are collected in "Best of Vangelis" (1978).
Vangelis stayed a bit more in Paris, where he recorded: "Poeme Symphonique", "Fair Que Ton Reve Plus Longue Que La Nuit" (1971) and the album "Earth" (1973), which was the first composition he did by himself.
Vangelis and his companions published the following albums, and they succeeded enough: "Rain and Tears" (1968), "Aphrodite's Child" (1969), "It's Five O'clock" (1969), "Best of Aphrodite's Child" (1969) and "666" (1970).

Main sequence is also the name of a composition of music by composer Vangelis on his 1976 album, Albedo 0.39 and is in reference to the astronomical term.
The main sequence of the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram is the curve where the majority of stars are located in this diagram.
This line is so pronounced because both the spectral type and the luminosity depend on a star's mass only to zeroth order as long as it is fusing hydrogen—and that is what almost all stars spend most of their "active" life doing.

Even in shortened form, his distinct pastiches are quite compelling, and the stretches of notes and rhythms don't become weary or monotonous at any point of the album.

321 -> Music, Music, Music: Chariots Of Fire: Academy Award, Best Original Score 1981 by Vangelis Order now @ 321-music.com
Yes, this did win the 1981 Oscar for best soundtrack...but to be honest, it's really an album along the same level of musicality as some of Vangelis's earlier soundtracks during the 1970s, and some of his other albums as well, such as "Albedo 0.39" or "China".
I can't imagine what an extremely tough decision it must of been for the Academy's voters to choose between Chariots and John Williams' magnificent score for Raiders of the Lost Ark. Vangelis won the Oscar while Williams was the recipient of the Grammy Award in 1981.
Vangelis won the '81 Academy Award for original score with this, and he did produce and perform this.
