When the political crisis 1912 had reached its keenest intensity, and Albert Baird Cummins, of Iowa, had avowed his purpose of voting for U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt, but his unwillingness to become an active member of a third party, one of his former supporters remarked with some feeling.
The softness of the termination suggested a disappointing elision a hint of not quite filling out the original intention of the word.
There are a good many things about Cummins that provoke a similar thought.
