Albert Coates Conducts (1926 - 1932), Classical Notes, Peter Gutmann
Except, that is, for Albert Coates, whose wildly energetic readings of the late romantics still pack an enormous wallop.
Coates was a large man and reportedly worked up an enormous sweat on the podium with his wild, demonstrative gestures; legend has it that Nikish once told him that he should use a whip rather than a mere baton to express his feelings.
Either of these volumes is fine, although the first (a single disc) is probably the safer recommendation; while Coates does a fine job with the wide-ranging repertoire on the second volume, it is in the fiery slavic material that he makes a stunning impression.

Everything about Albert Coates was larger than life, a huge man with a huge talent, more than often under-utilized by record producer Fred Gaisberg of EMI.
The Russian-born Coates was the spiritual heir of Nikisch, delineating clear lines and spare portamenti, but Coates' perspective was large, after Napravnik and competitive with Mengelberg, so that Coates formed and invigorated the LSO to rival any of the panoramic canvasses of the Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam.

But Albert Coates, born in St. Petersburg in 1882 of an English father and a Russian-born mother of English parentage, was a virtually forgotten figure.
All the Russian pieces here are superbly involving, but it was cunning to start the programme with Oberon since its tenderness, delicacy and wit (as well as vitality of course) immediately counter any idea that Coates’s music-making might prove gutsy and energetic but not particularly subtle.
Coates was also remembered as the conductor who perhaps recorded more Wagner than any other in the days when a recording of a complete opera by that composer was still only a pipe-dream.
