Cuyp (1594-1651/2) was the son of a glass painter and a pupil of Abraham Bloemaert at Utrecht.
Although he had little influence outside Dordrecht, Cuyp had several imitators there, and some of the paintings formerly attributed to him are now given to Abraham Calraet (1642-1722), who signed himself `AC' (the same initials as Cuyp).
In 1658 Cuyp married a rich widow, and in the 1660s he seems to have virtually abandoned painting.

 Aelbert Cuyp
Aelbert Cuyp (1620 - 1691) was one of the predominant Dutch landscape painters of the 17th century.
In large panoramic views of the Dutch countryside, highlights of a small blade of meadow grass, the mane of a tranquil horse, the horn of a dairy cow reclining by a stream, or the tip of a peasant's hat are all caught in a frozen atmospheric bath of yellow ocher light.
A Cuyp drawing may look like he intended it to be a finished work of art but it was most likely taken back to the studio and used as a reference for his paintings.

It is not quite clear what caused Cuyp to change his style so radically from his early manner, but it has been assumed to have been the influence of the newly fashionable Italian-style landscapes painted in Utrecht in the 1640s following the return of Jan Both from Italy.
Cuyp, however, did not slavishly imitate; he soon evolved his own very special style.
Cuyp responded to nature more than his detractors are prepared to admit, and a proportion of his pictures, contain no cows at all.

Aelbert Cuyp was born in the city of Dordrecht in 1620, the son of Jacob, who already was an established and well-to-do portrait and landscape painter in the historic town.
Influenced by Dutch and foreign painters who did travel south, Aelbert Cuyp developed a style which could be called ‘Acadian’: tranquil, non-Dutch scenes washed in a faded low sun and populated by shepherds and their animals, riders on horseback, farmers and hunters.
Cuyp’s canvases thus traveled farther away still, and it was not until 1965 when the top museum in the Netherlands - the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam - was able to bring a Cuyp ‘home’.
