Albert Embankment   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
The Albert Embankment is on the east bank of the Thames and was created by Sir Joseph Bazalgette out of Fore Street, reclaimed land and numerous small timber and boat building yards.
This embankment is one of three built by Bazelgette, the Victoria and Chelsea embankments being the other two.
The main reason for building the embankment was to protect the low-lying areas of Lambeth from flooding during tides and heavy rain.

The scheme involved major pumping stations at Deptford (1864) and at Crossness (1865) on the Erith marshes, both on the south side of the Thames, and at Abbey Mills (in the River Lea valley, 1868) and on the Thames Embankment (1875), north of the river.
The system was opened by the Prince of Wales in 1865, although the whole project was not actually completed for another ten years.
A formal monument on the riverside of the Victoria Embankment in central London commemorates Bazalgette's genius.

London Transport Central Area Routes 163–174   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Route 163 was originally introduced as a tram replacement in 1952 and ran from Plumstead Common to Victoria Embankment via Woolwich, Greenwich, New Cross, Peckham, Camberwell, Kennington and Westminster.
The second plate is particularly unusual as it will have come from the section of route between Embankment and Farringdon Street at a time when the Saturday service was limited to just a few early journeys, and the third “E” plate would have dated from the last years of the 168.
In 1957 the southern end of the route was exchanged with route 171, and so ran from Westminster via Kennington, Brixton and Herne Hill to West Norwood (Thurlow Arms) on Mondays to Saturdays, or Norwood Garage on Sundays.
