Albert Hammond Jr. | Way Out West

Hammond, who also cites "Vision of Division" and "You Only Live Once" as some of the songs that gelled quickly, says his personal favorites are "Ask Me Anything" and "Ize of the World." He also feels that this album had a collaborative feeling not found on the first two.
Hammond says the band was approached but was in the middle of putting the studio as well as the album together so couldn't really commit to performing.
Hammond's responses are short and to the point, but at times he still seems uninformed about some things regarding the group.

Drowned in Sound - Reviews - Live - Albert Hammond Jr
It’s easy to say that Albert’s solo work is just rejected Strokes songs, but there is something different in his music, something that separates the material of the two from merging in one giant cauldron of retro rock.
However, one thing is clear from tonight’s performance: Albert is actually good live despite certain perceptions of his other band, who were hovering the oily depths of inaudible on their last tour.
Albert Hammond Jr has continually emphasised that his solo project does not mean the end for The Strokes.

With Yours to Keep, Hammond-- like legendary third-wheel George Harrison before him-- becomes the first of his group to strike off for solo glory.
Hammond has given tunes to the Strokes before, mostly for 2001 tour video In Transit, but his prime non-instrumental contribution remains fan club-only giveaway "The Elephant Song", recorded in 1999 for a New York University class project.
Instead, Hammond's solo outing is a spry if unexceptional pop charmer, less supercilious than Is This It or Room on Fire but almost as cool.

Albert Hammond, Jr. - Yours to Keep - Review - Stylus Magazine
I should be able to coast through this review with a tidy “Hammond’s breezy Cali vibe provides a nice contrast to the urban cool of the Strokes,” but the disappointing truth is that the closer Hammond remains to Stroke-dom, the better he fares.
Hammond is well-suited to this solo gig: he’s got a silky set of pipes and an easy way with melody that will simultaneously impress and never, ever, ever make anyone forget his day job.
To his credit, Hammond sounds absolutely committed, and the songwriting chops are decent, but there’s absolutely zero gravitas to these tracks, their treble-heavy constructions blending into one long, chirping track.

If you’ve heard the album ‘Yours to keep’ you’ll already understand the aesthetic similarities between the Strokes’ work and Albert Hammond’s own, and it makes for a slight let-down of expectations once he begins the set.
This is compounded by the minimal chat uttered from Albert barely being received by the audience, partly through his mumbling, and partly through a sustained sense of anticlimax due to the lack of energy onstage.

Amazon.com: Yours to Keep: Music: Jr. Albert Hammond
The first in the group to make his own record, Hammond (son of the triumphant '70s singer and composer) comes up big, hammering out 10 songs brimming with beatific melodies ("Call an Ambulance"), sugary harmonies ("Scared"), and the same rampant guitar ("In Transit") that he wields with the big band.
Though he recruits prominent pals Sean Lennon and Ben Kweller for the ride, it's unnecessary, as Hammond's voice--both capable and charmingly unkempt--is a step above the monotonous murmur of Strokes singer Julian Casablancas (who also appears).
Hammond's far-reaching influences drift from AM pop to punk rock, but the mop-topped musician mostly keeps it close to the vest, blending shades of the Beach Boys ("Cartoon Music for Superheroes," complete with toy piano), John Lennon ("Blue Skies"), and the Pixies ("Back to the 101").

 Albert Hammond | CFRB 1010
Albert Hammond is one of the more successful pop/rock songwriters to come out of England during the 1960s and 1970s, and has also enjoyed a long career as a recording artist, his work popular in two languages on three continents across four decades.
Hammond was born in London in 1944 -- his family actually came from the British colony on Gibraltar, but wartime considerations caused his mother to be evacuated to London, where she gave birth.
He spent his childhood and youth on Gibraltar, where he became fluent in both English and Spanish -- that bilingual ability would serve him well in his later career.
