In the summers of 1922 and 1923, Krehbiel was invited by the Museum of New Mexico in Santa Fe to participate in its Visiting Artists Program and was given a studio in the prestigious Palace of the Governors next to his contemporary, Ashcan realist Robert Henri.
Krehbiel was a member of the faculty at The Art Institute of Chicago for 39 years and at the Armour Institute of Technology (later named the Illinois Institute of Technology) for 32 years.
Albert Henry Krehbiel passed away from a heart attack on June 29, 1945 in Evanston, Illinois, while preparing for a traveling and painting trip through Illinois and Kansas.

Albert Henry Krehbiel, one of seven children, was born in Denmark, Iowa, on November 25th, 1873, to John Jacob and Anna Leisy Krehbiel.
Krehbiel was well—known and highly regarded as an artist in Santa Fe, as well as in Chicago, during these years -- so much so, that the Museum of New Mexico provided him with a studio in the historic Palace of the Governors next door to his contemporary, famed Ashcan realist Robert Henri.
Krehbiel was a member of the Cliff Dwellers, Chicago Painters and Sculptors, Mural Painters of New York, and the Chicago Galleries Association.

Krehbiel was known to leave his Park Ridge home on a freezing cold morning and not return until the end of the day with two or three freshly painted canvas landscapes of the surrounding country.
Krehbiel has many works listed in the Smithsonian Institution Inventories of American Paintings and Sculpture and writings, personal letters, and selected archival material of Krehbiel’s are available on microfilm at the Smithsonian Institution Archives of American Art in Washington, DC, as well as at The Art Institute of Chicago’s Ryerson and Burnham Libraries.

Albert was awarded an American Traveling Scholarship from the Art Institute in 1903 and, having spent three years studying at Academie Julian in Paris and traveling and painting throughout Europe, had accepted a teaching position at the Institute in early 1906 while still overseas.
In 1907, Albert reduced his schedule to teaching summer sessions only and undertook the awarded commission to design and paint the eleven wall and two ceiling murals for the Illinois Supreme Court Building in the state capitol of Springfield (the murals were completed in 1911).
Dulah was Albert's only assistant, performing the duties of designing costumes, modeling, and conducting research on material pertinent to the theme of the murals.

Upon returning to the States in May of 1906, Krehbiel married fellow artist and Art Institute graduate, Dulah Marie Evans, on June 6th (Dulah went on to have an extremely accomplished career in her own right as a painter, printmaker and commercial artist).
Krehbiel, with Dulah's assistance, spent four years on the research, preparation and composition of the Supreme Court Building murals, which were completed in 1911.
Albert Krehbiel died on June 29th, 1945, the very day of his retirement from the Illinois Institute of Technology (he had recently agreed to stay on at the Art Institute of Chicago for one more year).

Krehbiel, Albert H. "Men cannot stop growing, nor can they continue making new things merely in imitation of what has been done.
But it is most apparent in his paintings of woods and river scenes along the shores of the Des Plaines River and the North Branch of the Chicago River, as well as the area around Saugatuck, Michigan, where he spent so many summers teaching and painting.
Characteristic of the Krehbiel landscapes is the feeling of peace and solitude imparted by his subtle blending of pastel shades in depicting the play of lights and shadows among the trees and in the icy rivers he loved to paint on location in even the worst of winter's snowy weather.
