In 1810, King Kamehameha I united the islands, through a series of battles, the last of which was a climactic stand on the edge of the Pali cliffs in the Nu`uanu valley of O`ahu.
Kamehameha, aided throughout his campaign with European firearms as well as traditional Hawaiian armament, drove the defenders over the cliffs to achieve their victory.
Kamehameha IV’s rule saw the explosion of the immigrant worker population from Asia, brought upon by the decreasing Hawaiian population which was largely killed off by diseases to which they had no resistance.

I have a few problems with the way Kamehameha does things, but it could charge ten times what it currently charges and the education available to your kids would still make it an incredible deal.
I have cousins who graduated both from Kamehameha and Punahou, and besides being extremely brilliant, I think in the case of my cousins who graduated from Punahou, it also helped to have "sponsors" (e.g., alumni of high standing) who helped them get in through good references.
So if Kamehameha fosters a sense of ohana that the public school doesn't engender, maybe that's the intangible that non-Hawaiians long for (besides the fact that it's a damned good education) and why they clamor to have access to this education.
